Rappahannock Area YMCA/Spotsylvania County SACC is Hiring a Summer Day Camp Counselor Near Fredericksburg, VA

We are looking for enthusiastic summer day camp counselors to join our team at sites in Stafford County and Spotsylvania County. Our ideal candidate is attentive, punctual, and reliable. This is a seasonal part time position beginning in May 2024 and ending in early August 2024.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Supervises a group of children.

2. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.

3. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.

4. Supports YMCA healthy eating and physical activities standards through coaching, mentoring, and monitoring menu quality.

5. Attends staff meetings and trainings.

6. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

7. Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.

· Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting

· Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.

· Must be at least 18 years of age.

· CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.

· Completes Praesidium within 7 days of hire date.

· Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

· Understands the YMCA is a public accommodation committed to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.

· Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

· Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.

· Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.

· Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.

· Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.

· Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
