Radio Free Asia is Hiring a Social Media Editor, BenarNews (Asia-Based) Near Washington, DC

Benar News is a digital media platform at Radio Free Asia that provides clear and accurate news on security, politics and human rights on the local and regional level in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Pacific island nations. We are seeking a Social Media Editor to help grow our social media and SEO presence, and engage with English-speaking targeted audiences.

This is a full-time position, open to candidates based in Manila, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur, and reports directly to Audience Engagement Lead in Washington D.C. The candidate must be willing to work in the late afternoon/early evenings in order to collaborate with colleagues in Washington D.C.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Help execute the social media and digital strategy to increase our presence across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube (and TikTok)
  • Lead the management of BenarNews’ English social channels
  • Produce and commission social-first content to be published across platforms
  • Work closely with the editorial team to drive audience growth and increased engagement through SEO
  • Use keyword research and SEO best practices to optimize content for SEO
  • Conduct audience listening and research
  • Identify and engage with online thought leaders, and relevant communities to expand BenarNews social media reach and build strategic partnerships.
  • Follow industry trends to identify innovative tools and processes; identifying opportunities to grow and engage audiences on new and existing platforms
  • Promote the quality, credibility and visibility of the BenarNews brand on appropriate social media and digital channels
  • Uphold and adhere to the BenarNews code of journalistic ethics and editorial guideline
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field
  • Minimum of three years working as social media editor or manager for a digital news organization
  • Strong proficiency in English and professional experience working for English language publications
  • Strong news judgment
  • Ability to write breaking news and clean copy
  • Extensive knowledge of established and emerging social media platforms in BenarNews' covered countries
  • Expert knowledge of social media and SEO trends
  • Eagerness to research and test innovative ideas
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud and other creative tools
  • Prior experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, and for whom English is not a first language
  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative mindset, with the ability to work across teams and departments to achieve shared goals, excellent conflict resolution ability
  • Knowledge of a BenarNews language is a plus
  • A strong passion and commitment for RFA/BenarNews mission.
