Radio Free Asia is Hiring a Head of News, Philippines , BenarNews (Manila-Based) Near Washington, DC

BenarNews is a digital media platform at Radio Free Asia that provides clear and accurate news on security, politics and human rights on the local and regional level in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Pacific island nations.

Reporting to the Managing Editor, collaborating closely with the Philippines Content Manager (based in the U.S) and managing the Correspondent (based in Manila), the Head of News will oversee service operations from the Philippines, from content production to people management and communication, ensuring top-notch quality, relevant and engaging stories are produced and published. This is a full-time role situated in the Philippines.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Monitor current events in the Philippines and the region, working together with the team to present newsworthy content that adheres to BenarNews’ editorial guidelines and mission
  • Manage Philippines service team members and stringers in the country, providing direction, training and coaching whenever required.
  • Submit well-written, balanced content in English with background and context
  • Assist in identifying exclusive and original stories for Philippines service
  • Support and supervise the production of visual content, working collaboratively with the BenarNews Video team in DC and in the Philippines.
  • Send daybook of items of interest to BenarNews by 7 am Washington time, Monday – Friday
  • Notify relevant personnel when major news breaks on weekends
  • Participate in audience engagement efforts, identifying how to better serve and impact Philippines audiences through different channels and formats
  • Recruit and train new staff and stringers for BenarNews Philippines service, as needed
  • Support the production of English-language content as needed
  • Occasionally assist RFA journalists with reporting from Philippines, as assigned
  • Adhere to and uphold the BenarNews Code of Journalistic Ethics
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of professional broadcast/print journalism, with a strong focus in the Philippines and its surrounding countries
  • Bachelor degree in Journalism or related field; an advanced degree is preferred
  • Top-notch writing and editing skills and superb storytelling ability
  • Native fluency in English-language writing skills; proficiency in a language of the Philippines preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experienced managing subordinates; ability to train and motivate staff
  • Ability to work in an international work place; excellent cross-cultural communication skills
  • Must be willing to work afternoon and evening hours in order to collaborate with Washington D.C staff
  • Professional experience with video or audio production for newsroom is a plus
  • Professional experience in working with social media management tools and analytics is a plus
