BenarNews is a digital platform at Radio Free Asia that provides clear and accurate news on security, politics and human rights on the local and regional level in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Pacific Island nations.

BenarNews is seeking a top-notch news correspondent to help cover the Philippines in diverse formats. This is a full time position based in the Philippines, and reports to the Head of News based in the Philippines.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Pitch and develop new story ideas with editors
• Produce special reports or features informed by original, on-the-ground reporting, on human interest stories and/or topics of interest to BenarNews
• Submit high-quality original photographs, with 5W captions, to illustrate reports
• Assist with daily news stories when assigned to do so
• Submit content in English as assigned
• Research information online and from other relevant news sources for the reports
• Cultivate and grow a diverse base of reliable sources. Identify and pursue the most relevant interviewees for a story or for obtaining supporting material

• Observe deadlines and be available for questions from editors
• Serve as back-up head of news, when the head of news is on leave
• Uphold and adhere to RFA’s code of journalistic ethics and editorial standards
• Promote the quality, credibility and visibility of the BenarNews brand
• Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to occasionally working with RFA’s teams journalists in other BenarNews or RFA countries

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field from an accredited college or university required; experience in lieu of degree may be considered.

• Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in broadcast or print journalism, in a reputable media organization preferred.
• Knowledge and understanding of current political, economic and social conditions in the Philippines and surrounding countries.
• Outstanding writing, reporting and visual skills. Videography and PTC skills highly desirable
• Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment and discretion in evaluating and presenting news.

• Strong computer skills along with knowledge and ability to utilize online and social media in creative and innovative ways and to adapt to new technologies as they evolve.

• Required language skills: Spoken and written fluency in English.
• Ability to work in an international work place; excellent cross-cultural communication skills.

• Must be willing to work afternoon and evening hours in order to collaborate with Washington D.C staff. Occasional weekend work is required.
