General Statement

The Laboratory Technician will participate in the preparation, set-up/break down of the Natural Sciences laboratories for day and evening classes, while assisting in the maintenance of equipment and inventories, maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the laboratories according to established standards and procedures and perform related work where required. The workload for this position may require day, late afternoon, evening or weekend hours and may take place in QCC Southbridge, Downtown Worcester, and the QCC Worcester Main Campus.

Supervision Received

Reports to the Biological Sciences Safety Officer and/or the Physical Sciences Safety Officer, and ultimately to the Dean of the School of Math and Science.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keep labs stocked with frequently used supplies, such as glassware, paper towels, and cleaning supplies.
  • Remove and wash dirty glassware after use in labs.
  • Provide additional materials if requested by faculty during labs.
  • Make sure lab spaces are clean before and after labs.
  • Notify the appropriate personnel of mechanical problems with equipment or other issues in the lab.
  • Sanitize and sterilize glassware if necessary.
  • Autoclave biohazard waste.
  • Assist in maintaining the inventory.
  • Prepare various culture media as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining a plant collection, microbiological cultures, and some small living organisms.
  • Read and interpret basic scheduling of lab classrooms.
  • Assist faculty and students with understanding laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for communicating with faculty and professional staff and fulfilling their lab needs during assigned shift.
  • Provide punctual services as required by Lab Manager's part time lab tech schedule.
  • Provide and accommodate for frequent communication channels with Lab Manager.
  • Actively support the teaching and learning process; practice honesty and integrity in and outside of the classroom; strive to create and support a student-centered environment while fostering academic innovation and excellence.
  • Work actively with other areas of the college to ensure a spirit of college wide collaboration, collegiality, civility, and teamwork. Respect the function of dissent in an academic institution while advancing a collegial atmosphere of campus collaboration.

Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications

  • Basic familiarity with scientific language and equipment such as pH meters, balances and glassware.
  • Familiar with basic use of Windows computers.
  • Reliable and punctual with scheduled work hours.
  • Reliable means of communication necessary (email and/or phone).
  • Have excellent communication skills and work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Able to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Able to carry 35 lbs.
  • Good interpersonal skills; approachable and courteous demeanor; comfortable interacting with multiple people.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Course work in a lab science, preferably biology, chemistry or physics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills.
