General Statement

The Locksmith/ Skilled Laborer Trades may install lock devices in doors, desks, office equipment and other units; repair locking devices and replace worn parts; make alterations in mechanisms; change lock combinations; trouble shoot locks; and perform related work as required.

Perform other activities to construct, maintain and/or repair walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, and other building systems.

Supervision Received

Incumbents of positions at this level receive direct supervision from employees of higher grade who provide instruction, assign work and review performance for effectiveness.

Supervision Exercised

Incumbents of positions at this level may exercise functional supervision (i.e., over certain but not all work activities, or over some or all work activities on a temporary basis) over 1 - 6 maintenance personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs lock devices in doors, desks, office equipment and other units according to blueprints, sketches and manuals by cutting holes in wood or metal according to specified dimensions and by fastening together parts of locks with bolts and rivets using hand tools and hand held power tools.
  • Repairs and/or overhauls locking devices such as mortise, rim, keying-the knob locks, dead bolt, office equipment, padlocks and emergency exit locks by repairing or replacing worn tumblers, springs or other parts of locking devices; by making alterations to locking mechanisms and units; and/or by replacing escutcheons and face plates on doors to change the size of existing holes to assure correct fit.
  • Repairs and/or installs locks containing dual locking capabilities by reworking locking devices designed to work in conjunction with other components and equipment to form a complete security surveillance system.
  • Changes lock combinations by inserting new or repaired tumblers into locks in order to increase security effectiveness.
  • Trouble shoots locking devices by determining appropriate techniques and trade practices to be followed; by deciding which components comprising the locking system are malfunctioning; and by making operational tests to determine the extent and location of malfunctions in locking devices to repair or replace the necessary parts.
  • Prepares sketches, drawings and diagrams to identify tolerances, dimensions and critical parts or surfaces relative to locking device.
  • Performs related duties such as cutting duplicate keys; removing broken keys from locks; opening locks without keys or combinations; cleaning and lubricating lock assemblies; and maintaining records concerning work performed, type and coding of lock installations and location of locks and keys.
  • Performs related work such as framing pictures; making window and door screens; drilling holes in signs; ordering materials and supplies and cleaning; and sharpening and tempering various tools and equipment.
  • Assists in buildings and related structures applying carpentry techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, roofs, gutters, locks, air conditioners, mail slots, handicapped chair rails and ramps, shelving, etc.
  • Performs routine laboring tasks to assist skilled tradespeople engaged in maintenance, repair or construction work using hand and electrical tools appropriate to craft, such as assisting with the dismantling, fabrication, alteration and construction of building structures and building systems.
  • Assist in the installation and repair of refrigeration and heating units. Inspect and maintain such units. Assist in the installation or relocation of major equipment. Assist in major renovation or construction projects.
  • Assists in preventative maintenance, such as: lubricating and greasing motors, pumps, and bearings; adjusting and replacing belts; or tightening and lubricating chains.
  • Actively support the teaching and learning process; practicing honesty and integrity in and out of the classroom; strive to create and support a student-centered environment while fostering academic innovation and excellence.

Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of materials, equipment and methods commonly employed in building maintenance and locksmithing.
  • Ability to operate and care for hand tools and power tools related to associated trades work.
  • Ability to make general repairs of a simple nature.
  • Physical ability to withstand strain of performing manual tasks.
  • Some experience in general janitorial duties.
  • Ability to take direction from supervisor and work alone without supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others and deal tactfully with others.
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Driver's License issued by the Massachusetts RMV.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer experience with Key Tacking Software Programs and Systems.
  • Experience in a college/university environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • 10 Hour OSHA safety certification.
