Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska is Hiring a Culture Coordinator Near Unalaska, AK

General Description:

Culture Coordinator will be required to understand and promote cultural activities following policy and procedure of allowable cultural relevant workshops and/or traditional healing activities for tribal members. This position will coordinate logistical support for cultural programs to include interdepartmental services, cultural classes, vendor contracts, maintenance, and leads special projects. This role will aid the department in maintaining and updating the calendar and schedule of events, support and maintains partner and client relationships to ensure excellent customer service, proper planning, and execution of cultural programs and special projects.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a team: the team includes co-workers, partner agencies and the participant.
  • Create training and collaborative partnerships with service organizations also working with victims of various crimes.
  • Coordinate the facilitation culturally relevant traditional healing services for youth activities or workshops.
  • Assist with cross-departmental programming as needed for regional youth programing events involving victims of abuse or crimes to ensure integrated healthy relationship concepts.
  • Ensure appropriate support staff are scheduled for cultural programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in primary educational systems, Alaska Native institutions and organizations, Alaska Native culture, language, values, and traditions.
  • Also facilitates identification and development of culturally appropriate materials.
  • Acts as Cultural Technical Assistant
  • Develops, schedules and coordinates cultural activities and other Native cultural components of the project, to include cultural competence training.
  • Provides guidance and instruction for traditional skills, e., beadwork, storytelling, skin sewing, community potluck, process salmon on unit.
  • Promote healthy, substance-free community activities (such as craft groups, educational/outreach programs, in-school presentations, and other programs) to provide protection and community development.
  • Attend meetings, and workshops in support of program development.
  • Learns the development of workplans and budgets in grant.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize projects and adapt to high pressure.
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of programmatic public outreach and communication events, in-person or virtual depending on circumstances.
  • Assist with funding entity documentation and reporting.
  • Attends related training opportunities to maintain efficiency and promote upward.

Education & Experience:

Two years of college education preferred, and a minimum of three years related work experience; or any combination of training and experience that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities. Knowledge of treatment and recovery models in use with Alaska Native people, including traditional health/healing practices and culture-based services activities. Knowledge of risk behavior and issues. Knowledge of Alaska Native and American Indian cultures and local community resources.

Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of state and federal background check.

Licenses & Special Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native/American Indian community.
  • Must be flexible and able to work nights and weekends.
