Position overview

This Field Safety Professional is a shared safety resource and technical expert among the branches in the Central Valley, CA region. This position is instrumental in enhancing the culture, strengthening the safety program and integration of safety considerations into the business operations. This role will be observing, auditing, training and coaching safe behaviors of field, shop operations and leadership. By teaming with operations, work processes and program gaps are to be analyzed, and new or revised programs and training implemented to reduce or eliminate safety risks. This role will also assist in developing strategic, functional excellence processes, systems and tools to drive the safety culture and performance forward across the company. This work involves collaboration with Environmental and Facilities, Fleet, Human Resources, Engineering and Project Management to reduce work task risks and improve safety integration within business process. Addressing severe operational risks and the needed actions will be taken in collaboration with the appropriate business leaders.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Implements safety compliance programs, specific safety and environmental programs provided by corporate groups and reporting tools, in collaboration with operations, and with support or guidance of corporate groups
  • Partners with branch and shop leaders to clarify leaders’ roles as safety champions, and provide coaching
  • Provides safety onboarding to new hires and Safety training to field operators, shop mechanics and leaders.
  • Supports operations to ensures all SHE and other incidents are reported, timely and using internal systems.
  • Conducts and coaches branch leaders to perform root cause investigation on incidents and near misses.
  • Provides corrective action recommendations and assists in implementing those corrective actions and tracking for closure.
  • Tracks SHE performance metrics, analyzes trends and needed improvements to reduce risks
  • Administers company Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
  • Assist in Managing Site Contractors/Subcontractors: Involved in Plant contractor selection, management decisions, incorporating safety considerations. Provide contractor Safety orientation, in collaboration with Corporate Safety, Environment/Facilities, HR and operations
  • Coaches operations to conduct Daily safety meetings (Daily Safety Sheet -DSS-reviews)
  • Conducts periodic plant area safety inspections, to ensure compliance, observe and correct unsafe behaviors and positively recognize safe conditions and behaviors
  • Develops methods to engage plant operations employees in safety risk identification or safety (and quality) improvement ideas
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs
  • Collaborates with Corporate Safety and Environment/Facility management for agency inspections, communications and permits
  • Partners with HR and Corporate Safety to coordinate return to work responsibilities for injured workers and providing meaningful light duty transitional opportunities
  • Tracks and assess risks of changes in materials, operational conditions and storage requirements for SHE impacts
  • Optimizes the company-wide onboarding process, and other company-wide processes, systems for building culture, training and coaching our leaders to reduce our work risks
  • Travels to other branches and regions as needed
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Comfortable and effective in working with Site leadership, business leaders and operators, and Corporate Safety and Environment personnel in a positive, collaborative and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to effectively deal with changing priorities and timelines through analytical problem solving.
  • Proven time management and follow-through skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team-oriented environment.
  • Display superior written, oral communication skills and effective listening skills.
  • Display organized recordkeeping and documentation skills.
  • Highly motivated, with a demonstrated passion for excellence and taking initiative

Education and Experience

  • Associates degree in Safety, Occupational Health or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 10 years practical experience in managing safety in the field environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, and other state and federal agency safety requirements
  • First aid and CPR Certified
  • CALOSHA 30 hr
  • Familiar with Federal and CA State Environmental Regulations a plus
  • Familiar with Six Sigma or other quality trainings or certifications a plus
  • ASP, CSP, STS, CALOSHA 500 Qualifications or Certifications are a plus.
  • Proficient in MS Office suite
  • Periodic travel to plant operations, job sites and other venues.
  • Valid CA Driver License and good driving record
