Providence Schools is Hiring a Director of PK-12 Math Near Providence, RI

The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 22,000 students (about the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) attending our 37 schools. PPSD employs more than 3,200 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 11 high schools, and 2 public district charter schools. Of our employees, about 2,000 are educators, and over 600 others directly support our schools' students and families.

Our schools are diverse learning communities. Approximately 68% of our students are Latinx, 15% Black, 7% White, 4% Asian, 5.5% Multi-racial and 1% Native American. Approximately 40% of students are multilingual, and about 16% receive special education services. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Our students and families speak more than 55 languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

The organization's non-union position's essential function is to provide professional leadership, consultation, and support for the District’s PK-12 math education programming. The position is responsible for supporting teachers and administrators in meeting identified goals in math education programs, assisting schools in obtaining necessary classroom materials and other resources, developing and implementing special programs and services as assigned, and performing related professional and administrative duties as required. The position is integral in curriculum selection, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation to ensure system success and coherence. The position develops and implements programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction through conferences.

RIDE Requirements:

  • Rhode Island District Level Administrator Certificate – Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and/or Building Level Administrator and one or more of the following: 

  • RI Elem. 1-6 with MS Math Ext. 5-8 or MS Math Ext. 5-8 Certification or

  • Any RI Secondary Math Certification or

  • Right to Read Proficiency within one year of hire

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in the areas of math, curriculum and instruction, or administration/educational leadership required

  • 5 years of outstanding teaching or related experience in math

  • ESL Preferred

  • Bilingual or Multilingual preferred

We’re looking for someone to:?

  • Promote mindsets of high expectations and an “all students can” agenda connected directly to the math curriculum, instruction, and support systems.

  • Provide leadership for district-wide math programming inclusive of standards-based math practice curriculum development, resource selection, and staff development, including summer and after-school programs.

  • Coordinate proven, research-based methods and expertise in math strategies for curriculum reform; collects and analyzes data to improve products and services delivered to schools to support student achievement; and provides leadership in designing and developing new programs and initiatives to meet identified needs.

  • Develop plans for the implementation of a multi-tiered professional learning program to ensure district teachers achieve a level of proficiency in or awareness of the knowledge and effective practices of math instruction through in-service workshops or visits to teachers in schools to model lesson instruction.

  • Support the Executive Director of Professional Learning in developing professional development, training, and general oversight of math coaches' work and math teacher instruction. 

  • Play a leadership role in designing and implementing a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) and district-wide math assessments. Develops a formalized, age-specific intervention plan to address the math-related learning needs of students behind grade level.

  • Attend and participates in district, school level, and/or PLC meetings. ? Meet regularly with math department and teacher leaders to ensure vertical and horizontal articulation of curriculum and instructional vision.

  • Share effective, high-yield instructional strategies with teachers.

  • Create student-centered instructional models and includes opportunities for activation, direct instruction, discourse, practice, feedback, debriefing, continuous improvement reflection, comprehensive assessments to drive instruction, and small group learning.

  • Observe teachers in the classroom as scheduled and/or as requested by principals.

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director of Professional Learning and the District Director of Coaching, create systems for coaches to provide direct feedback and to model lessons for teachers.

  • Provide testing support by providing teachers with standardized test preparation materials, analyzing test results, and conducting related meetings and workshops.

  • Monitor supplemental instructional tools and reports quarterly progress to the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. 

  • Coordinate the design, support, and implementation of quality professional learning programs in Math instruction, assessment, and intervention for principals, coaches, teachers, and support staff consistent with district, state required, and national standards for professional learning.

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director of Professional Learning, develop a professional learning program in the knowledge and practices of math instruction specifically for Teachers, Administrators, Coaches, Teaching Assistants, and Instructional Assistants.

  • Monitor the quality of implementation of the math programs and initiatives in classrooms and extended learning.

  • Collaborate with the Data and Assessment to evaluate and recommend an appropriate assessment to ensure timely screening, diagnosis, and progress monitoring for students in the development of the assessment calendar.

  • Support data conversations and the work of the school Common Planning Team.

  • Provide quarterly updates on the progress of math achievement with CAO/ED of Curriculum and Instruction. 

  • Participate in the selection and evaluation process for department staff; provides the necessary administrative and supervisory function for appropriate leadership of the department staff, including math coaches; uses creative and critical thinking in curriculum work, staff management, and problem-solving.

  • Serve as district liaison to curriculum vendors, manages contracts with partners supporting the math initiatives in the district in partnership with the Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction.

  • Assist in the development and management of budgets to support and maintain quality district programming.

  • Collaborate with supervisors and transformation officers to identify and coordinate targeted school-based support to improve instruction with students of differing cognitive and language ability; with the Office of Special Education and the Office of Multi-Language Learners to design, coordinate, and implement innovative programs that support the needs of these student populations. 

  • Ensure that District initiatives comply with state standards and federal guidelines.

  • Collaborate closely with Transformation Officers and Principals to align math education strategies with overall school performance and student achievement objectives.

  • Conduct classroom observations to provide actionable feedback directly to teachers and instructional staff, aimed at enhancing math instruction and student learning outcomes.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in handling difficult conversations with sensitivity and effectiveness, facilitating resolution and progress in challenging situations.

  • Effectively report on program progress, challenges, and achievements to both higher management and program staff, ensuring clear communication and alignment with district goals.

  • Employ strategic visioning for district-wide math education with a meticulous attention to detail in the communication and execution of programs and initiatives.

  • Achievement Focus: Sets challenging goals, demonstrates persistence, and overcomes obstacles to achieve goals.

  • Equity: Exhibits a commitment to equity and creates a sense of urgency to close achievement gaps.

  • Duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. 

  • Administrative or supervisory experience desirable.

  • Successful recent leadership experiences in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation, and staff training or other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. 

  • Experience in test development, curriculum development, and grant writing desirable. 

  • Experience with computers and instructional technology applications.

  • Experience using instructional technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability.

  • 5 years of successful leadership experience (building leader/principal, assistant principal, and/or instructional coach). 

  • Significant K-12 urban leadership experience in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation and staff training; or other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. 

  • Knowledge of research-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.

  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills. 

  • Provide site level observation, feedback, model lessons, coaching, and support in continuous improvement strategies relative to math curriculum and instruction regularly.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to change quickly and meet deadlines.

  • A proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative. 

  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one's work. 

  • Commitment to the belief that all students can learn, to educational equity, and to the PPSD vision.
