Providence Housing Authority is Hiring an Electrician Near Providence, RI

Purpose:

JOURNEYMAN'S LICENSE REQUIRED.

To provide skilled services at a journeyman level in a broad range of maintenance and repair work. Performs work in a self-directed manner but may be assigned staff. Works along with or may provide direction and guidance to assigned staff. Demonstrates capability in carrying out work assignments including planning, laying out stock, materials and equipment and performing the work to completion. Exercises competent and responsible independent judgment in resolving work issues and following agency policies and procedures.

Essential Tasks of the Position:

Performs skilled electrical construction, maintenance and repair work on agency’s housing stock and properties. Provides journeyman level skills in electricity enabling the agency to possess in-house skills in the:

  • Ability to install, modify, maintain and repair electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, appliances and equipment of buildings, grounds, units and general facilities
  • Ability to provide lead employee services in the accomplishment of electrical tasks and the instruction of less skilled co-workers

Performs skilled electrical installation, maintenance and repair work

  • Performs the installation of electrical wiring systems to switches, outlets, appliances and transformers in accordance with appropriate electrical safety codes. Uses tools such as wire pullers, wire strippers, pipe vise, conduit tools, drills, wrenches and knockout punches
  • Repairs appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, disposals by troubleshooting circuits for defects. Uses test equipment such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, test lights and megas
  • Performs internal and external connections of complicated electrical equipment such as motor controllers, switchboxes, transformers, and generators on multiphase circuits. Refers to circuit diagrams, blueprints, schematics
  • Performs electrical maintenance and repair to emergency lighting systems, incinerators, compactors, high voltage transformers. Replace defective wires, cleaning and rewiring imperfect contacts. Replaces burned out elements, fuses and/or switches, and loose connections, low voltage systems including fire alarms, intercoms, data cabling and emergency call systems.
  • Plans the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, load, capacity or wiring systems
  • Interprets building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, electrical maintenance and repair manuals
  • Ensures the proper installation and safe operation of wiring circuits and lines
  • Installs a variety of components in electrical systems including wire (Romex, Bx, single conductor, low voltage, high voltage), electrical boxes, panels, motors, lighting fixtures, meter sockets, switch plugs, conduit piping and EMT piping, etc…
  • Installs and maintains smoke, heat and intrusion alarms

Possesses self-directed work skills combined with basic knowledge of planning, organizing and completing work assignments in an efficient, safe and timely manner

  • Maintains and complies with safe and sanitary work conditions for self and others
  • Carries out work assignments according to work schedule, determining work approaches, methods and techniques

Maintains a level of proficient skills and methods acceptable to agency standards of objects

  • Work involves walking, bending, crawling, reaching and standing for long periods of time

Work Schedule:

  • Ability to work 40 hour week
  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours including ability to be on-call 24 hours a day including nights, weekend days and holidays and overtime, as assigned

Equipment Used:

  • Competency in the use of power and hand tools and equipment associated with building maintenance and plumbing repair operations including staging, ladders and all protective devices

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education Level

  • High school diploma or equivalent vocational experience, required
  • Industrial arts/vocational training participation in crafts or trade apprenticeship training, required (or)
  • Successfully completed Apprenticeship Training Program, required

Experience in Related Field

  • 5 years’ experience in basic and advanced electrical work at Journeyman level, required (5 years to include years spent working as an Apprentice)
  • 5 years’ experience in electrical maintenance/construction, repair or remodeling work, preferred
  • Experience in working in public housing setting, preferred

Knowledge, skills, abilities, licenses and certifications

  • Rhode Island Journeyman Electrician License, required
  • Master Electrician License, preferred
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local electrical codes
  • Working knowledge of electrical theory
  • Working knowledge of safety procedures used while working with electricity
  • Skilled in use of hand tools and equipment
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, blueprints, diagrams, repair manuals, etc
  • Ability to plan and lay out electrical wiring systems for proper and safe operation
  • Rhode Island (Class 2) driver's license unrestricted except for corrective lenses
  • Possess Rhode Island Electricians License, required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all assignments as mandated
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other agency personnel
  • Ability to relate to and interact with elderly/disabled and family residents in low and moderate income housing settings
  • Ability to be flexible and perform work under time pressure
  • Ability to lead and give directions to other (new/inexperienced) staff
