Cheltenham Township, a suburb of Philadelphia in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, is seeking an experienced Director of Parks and Recreation to join a new and dynamic team in developing the Township’s next generation of parks and recreation programming and facilities. This position reports directly to the Township Manager and is primarily focused on managing the day-to-day operations of the Parks and Recreation Department, focusing on the provision of excellent recreation facilities and programs that meet the diverse needs of Cheltenham residents.

Cheltenham is currently challenged by its aging facilities and is in the process of planning for the future of those facilities, which includes two outdoor swimming pools, two community centers with library branches, two standalone libraries, and two event centers. Many of its facilities are historic sites. In addition, Cheltenham offers a variety of playgrounds, sports courts, sports fields, trails and open spaces in more than 200 acres of parkland.

Cheltenham’s next Director of Parks and Recreation will need to be creative in developing affordable programming until a plan for the future of the Township’s facilities is finalized. The Parks and Recreation Director will be actively involved in planning for and implementing a modern and expansive recreation program and facilities.

The new Director of Parks and Recreation should be ready to hit the ground running to assist with the planning of facilities and developing fresh programming for the Township. A successful candidate’s background will include a minimum of eight-years of progressively responsible experience in professional recreation programs, with a minimum of five years in a responsible administrative and supervisory capacity, municipal setting preferred, or equivalent relevant experience. Experience with operating commercial swimming pools is required. Must be able to obtain Red Cross Standard First Aid and Adult Certification upon hire and maintain certifications during employment with the Township. Recreation and Aquatic certifications a plus, including: Pesticide Certification, Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI), Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP)/Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE), Certified Pool Operator (CPO)/Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO). Must be able to obtain a CPO within one year of hire.

The starting salary range for this position is $90,000 to $110,000, negotiable for the right candidate.
