Summer Free for All – Arts, Culture, & Special Events is a comprehensive program that includes the following programs within it:

  • Movies, Concerts, and Events in the Park
  • Arts in the Park (Mobile Arts Studios)
  • CMC Music Camps

CULTURAL EVENTS PROGRAM (Movies, Concerts & Events)
Summer Free for All (SFFA) builds community through free, inclusive, and family-friendly activities that celebrate Portland's diverse cultures and local artists. SFFA Cultural Events partners with community groups, artists, nonprofits, culturally-specific groups, and more to produce free concerts, movies, and cultural events throughout Portland. This is provided to impact and enrich community through cultural expression, as we aim to create unforgettable experiences. The events are led by Event Producers and supported by Recreation Leaders and Attendant positions.

ARTS IN THE PARK (Mobile Arts Studios)
Arts in the Park is an outreach program of the Multnomah Arts Center. This program brings art and music experiences to the public in parks and other community locations throughout the City. Arts in the Park programming is delivered by self-contained mobile units which provide free, safe, on-site, drop-in, enriching community visual and performing arts experiences. They are led by Specialized Arts Instructors and supported by Counselor positions. Those interested in the Specialized Arts Instructor position should apply here.
MUSIC CAMPS
The Community Music Center is partnering with the Center Powered by Y.O.U.TH to provide creative and engaging music camps for youth in East Portland. These music camps will have a focus on Black cultural music styles and traditions, making use of a digital music production lab, instrument collection, and sound recording booth. Instructors will lead these camps and will be supported by Counselor positions. Those interested in the instructor opportunities should apply here.

This recruitment is for positions held at various parks located throughout Portland. This is an open and continuous recruitment and intended for summer employment only.

Positions include:

  • Counselor and Lead Counselor (approximately 14 opportunities)
  • Attendant (approximately 12 opportunities)

RECREATION ASSOCIATE - COUNSELOR
Position/s: Counselor – These positions are union represented.
Counselors organize, plan, and lead a variety of activities that support the physical, social, and cognitive development pre-school and school-aged participants. These activities include, but are not limited to: art, crafts, music, performance, science, games, nature, and sports. These positions are responsible for maintaining discipline and safety while monitoring participants. Counselors consistently model appropriate behavior, maintain accurate program records, and perform other duties as assigned.

Recreation Associate - Counselor: Arts in the Park
This position works as a member of a team to prepare and deliver performing and visual arts activities in partnership with Free Lunch Play Program sites, and other locations. Counselors arrive on site where Arts in the Park mobile units are assigned each day. They set up and tear down equipment such as tents, signs, tables, chairs, and arts and crafts activity stations. They create a welcoming atmosphere, engaging playfully with park users and guests. Counselors also provide information about PP&R programs, events, opportunities, and news. This role assists Specialized Teaching Artists and Arts in the Park Lead Counselors to deliver safe, fun, and equitable activities.

Prior experience with arts or music generally enables employees in this position to be more successful.

Locations: North Portland, Northeast Portland, East Portland, Outer East Portland, and Southwest Portland.

Shift Range: Monday through Friday 10:00am-3:00pm; Some weekends by arrangement.

Recreation Associate - Counselor: Music Camps
Music Camps will focus on Black cultural music styles and traditions. Prior experience in music creation, digital music production and/or instrumental music generally enables employees in this position to be more successful.

Location: Community Music Center programs at The Center Powered by Y.O.U.TH (SE 162nd & Stark) and neighboring parks.

Shift Range: Weekday mornings and afternoons.

Ages: Counselor - Must be at least 17 years old.

Wage Range: Applicants start at the entry hourly rate
Counselor (Recreation Aide): $18.90 - $22.05

  • Entry is $18.90

Training Wage: The training wage is $18.90 for all counselor positions.

RECREATION ASSOCIATE - LEAD COUNSELOR
Position/s: Lead Counselor – These positions are union represented.
Lead Counselors are staff leaders. They are expected to consistently communicate and model exceptional customer service, safety protocols, and engagement techniques to all Counselors and volunteers on a consistent basis. Lead Counselors are also responsible for prioritizing the safety of all staff and guests, documenting, and maintaining accurate records, being a liaison to all program partners, creating a culture of inclusiveness, care, and fun, ensuring staff and volunteers remain engaged and on-task, daily communication with supervisors.

Recreation Associate - Lead Counselor: Arts in the Park

This role assists Specialized Teaching Artists and provides leadership to Arts in the Park Counselors to deliver safe, fun, and equitable activities.

Prior experience with arts or music generally enables employees in this position to be more successful.

Locations: Drivers report to Southwest Portland and drive vehicles to a designated location in North Portland, Northeast Portland, East Portland, or Outer East Portland each shift.

Shift Range: Monday through Friday 9:30am-3:30pm, some weekends by arrangement.

*Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record at time of appointment. Must be comfortable driving a cargo van.
*Must be able to lift and move 20 pounds throughout the shift each day.

Recreation Associate - Lead Counselor : Music Camps
Lead Counselors for Music Camps participates in program leadership and provide direction to counselor staff. Music Camps will focus on Black cultural music styles and traditions. Prior experience in music creation, digital music production and/or instrumental music generally enables employees in this position to be more successful.

Location: Community Music Center programs at The Center Powered by Y.O.U.TH (SE 162nd & Stark) and neighboring parks.

Shift Range: Weekday mornings and afternoons.

Wage Range: Applicants start at the entry hourly rate:

RECREATION ASSOCIATE - ATTENDANT
Position/s: Attendant– These positions are union represented.
Attendant positions support the Summer Free for All Concerts, Movies and Events program. Attendants monitor drop-in recreation activities in their area of assignment. This role creates a welcoming atmosphere by engaging with park and facility guests. They provide excellent customer service and are a resource for PP&R information. Attendants help maintain clean facilities and/or park spaces, monitoring use of space and needs of guests. This role upholds PP&R's code of conduct and is proactive in addressing potential safety concerns. Attendants communicate with supervisor, rangers, and security under established guidelines. This role completes other duties as assigned, including assistance with record keeping.

Recreation Associate - Attendant - Facility Attendant
As staff for the Cultural Events Program, you will work as a member of a team to prepare and deliver movies, concerts, and other special events. This team helps create a welcoming atmosphere, engaging with park and event guests of all ages, sponsors, food vendors, and performers. Members of this team provide excellent customer service and are resources for PP&R information. This team loads and transports equipment to parks in City vehicles, operating lift gates as needed. This team also helps assemble and disassemble equipment for events, including but not limited to stages, audio/visual equipment, and inflatable movie screens. They also help maintain clean park spaces, monitor their assigned spaces and needs of guests, and are proactive in addressing potential safety concerts. Members of this team uphold PP&R's Code of Conduct, communicating with their supervisor, park rangers, and security under established guidelines.

Locations: Various parks around Portland

Shift Ranges: Schedule may be weekdays and weekends, afternoons, evenings, with the possibility of staying late (past midnight)

Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record at time of appointment.
