FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is home to a three-level
Aquarium which educates guests on ecosystems found throughout South Florida's crucial aquatic
environments and the organisms found within them. Conservation is integrated throughout each exhibit
and into the WetLab, a public-facing research and education venue where guests interact with scientists
and observe coral experiments in progress. These public-facing experiments not only augment current
restoration research by investigating the benefits of multi-species interactions in coral restoration but
provide interactive experiences for guests to learn about the importance of coral restoration.
PURPOSE: The Marine Conservation Intern will be stationed in the WetLab, educating visitors about
current research and restoration activities both in the lab and throughout Floridas Coral Reef. Half of
this internship will support conservation efforts both at Frost Science and in the field for restoration,
program development, event facilitation, and data collection. The other half of the internship will be an
introduction to husbandry at Frost Science. The intern will assist staff in daily maintenance and care of
exhibits and aquariums as needed. Interns must have a strong interest in the marine science, STEM
education, coral restoration, conservation, and communication as well as strong interpersonal and
organizational skills.
SKILLS AND OPPORTUNITIES GAINED:

A comprehensive understanding of coral restoration in South Florida
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide educational opportunities for visitors in the WetLab, maintaining visitor database,
communication with guests, and ensuring exhibit presentation readiness
Conduct research in Marine Conservation WetLab and/or Bachelor Environmental Center
Assist Husbandry staff in daily maintenance and care of aquatic exhibits and support systems
Assist in planning and execution the annual ReeFLorida Symposium
Opportunity to assist in citizen science programming and coral nursery development
Develop and complete special projects as needed.
Perform other assigned tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be actively enrolled in college/university and have a faculty advisor to verify the hours and
provide educational credit for the internship.
Interest in Frost Sciences conservation mission
Confident public speaking skills
AAUS Scuba Certification preferred
Background or interest in citizen science, science communication, coral restoration, animal care,
environmental science, or wildlife biology desired
Familiarity with coral ecology
Proficient in Microsoft Office and Website management
Reliable and punctual, with good attendance.
Positive attitude and the ability to work well with different personalities in a fast-paced
environment.
Proficiency in English, multilingual is desirable
Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Must be 18 years or older.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
This position requires working with tools and chemicals using appropriate personal protective
equipment.
o Work activities include bending, reaching, and lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds of
weight.
o Work sometimes performed outdoors, under direct sunlight or light rain, with some
office work as well.
This position may require SCUBA diving to assist the coral restoration program efforts.
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Background check clearance.
Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:
6 Months, June 1- November 30, 2024
Must be able to commit to 40 hours a week

Early morning availability required
