Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is Hiring an Assistant Director of Science Education (Full-Time) Near Miami, FL

SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director of Science Education has direct oversight of the operations of informal education initiatives and learning experiences at the museum from conception to implementation and works under the supervision of the Director of Science Education. These experiences include, but are not limited to: camp programs, programming for youth with special needs, field trip experiences, internships, community engagement, learning opportunities in line with special events, curriculum development and professional learning opportunities for K-12 classroom teachers, early learning programs and in-museum public programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to the established policies and procedures of the Museum.
  • Work alongside the Director of Science Education to provide oversight on all education program initiatives and work with a team of science education professionals to develop and implement informal science learning experiences.
  • Assist with leading the operations of educational programs and initiatives at the museum and within the community.
  • Assist with implementing new models of innovative programming serving diverse audiences and utilizing unique technologies and varied learning modalities.
  • Support and/or lead programming implementation aligned with grants, federal and foundational.
  • Provide direct education team management and support including project management and mentorship.
  • Oversee education reservations team which work to book field trips, camps and other programs.
  • Work closely with other museum departments with regard to program design, implementation and staffing models.
  • Collaborate with external partners as necessary to support program implementation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a science discipline. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least 4-6 years in educational program development and implementation at a museum, zoo or aquarium, or similar informal learning environment with a portion of that in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in sales and/or marketing revenue-generating programs/products is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  2. Experience with new program development and familiarity with museum/zoo/aquarium best practices.
  3. Knowledge of informal science education teaching and learning, theory and practice.
  4. Ability to manage multiple staff, including schedule management, performance assessment, and training.
  5. Ability to develop educational programs with an emphasis on learning through active, inquiry-based exploration.
  6. Ability to think strategically and executive plans to meet revenue goals.
  7. Experience working with children, youth and families of diverse backgrounds and income levels.
  8. Comfort working within unfamiliar environments; ability to initiate connections and build new relationships with stakeholders.
  9. Ability to present oneself as an ambassador for Frost Science.
  10. Ability to adhere to and manage budgets, including report generation.
  11. Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously.
  12. Able to work both collaboratively across departments as well as independently to achieve programmatic benchmarks.
  13. Comfort with design and implementation of new models of engagement, new technologies, and unique programming models.
  14. Able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively share information across and between multiple disciplines and reach audiences with varied technical and organizational knowledge.
  15. Bilingual is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work time will be split between working in an open office setting and on the floor observing programs, and helping with program oversight. Occasional exposure to outdoor activities may be requested. Weekend and evening work in alignment with programs is sometimes required.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Level 2 background clearance as defined by the Florida Statutes.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug-Free Workplace Program.
