Duties

• Provides care to patients by determining the optimal way for obtaining blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
• Verifies test requisitions by matching information with the nursing station log and alerting unit employees to irregularities.
• Verifies patient identification and instructs patients on sample procedures.
• Performs venipunctures and finger sticks to obtain blood sample.
• Maintains specimen integrity by aseptic technique, adherence to department procedures, and adherence to isolation protocols.
• Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring tests in collaboration with nursing professionals to ensure proper medication dosage to collection time.
• Monitors gathered specimens by initialing, dating, and documenting collection times, as well as keeping daily collecting counts.
• Performs bedside glucose testing, records data, and reports results to the unit nurse manager to monitor glucose levels.
• Conducts bleeding-times tests by inputting results onto a computer and informing the pathologist if they go outside of normal ranges.
• Contacts the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory to address anomalous test requests, forwards unresolved orders back to the source for further explanation, and notifies the supervisor of unresolved orders.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Proven track record in providing exceptional customer service
• Ability to work independently or in a team environment
• Comfortable working under minimal supervision
• Flexibility to work overtime as needed
• Able to pass a standardized color blindness test
• Ability to lean, bend, stoop, crouch, and reach above shoulders and below knees
• Ability to lift up to 5 lbs., and occasional lifting of materials up to 32 lbs. and rarely 50 lbs.
• Due to potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens (risk level 1), 90% of work tasks require prolonged glove wear
