Summary:

The pianist is responsible for piano accompaniment for Houston Ballet Academy classes and Houston Ballet company class as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide piano accompaniment for Houston Ballet company class and Houston Ballet Academy classes, including: all levels of technique class, pointe, pas de deux, men’s class, character, and possible Academy rehearsals.
  • Consistently offer creative and innovative musical repertoire for class.
  • Maintain and increase personal class book and the Academy piano music library.
  • Research and learn class repertoire as needed, including notating choreographic landmarks if appropriate.
  • May be requested to play Company class, Company studio rehearsals and HB II rehearsals and performances.
  • Demonstrate diplomacy and tact in all interactions.
  • Communicate music requests made by Academy teachers to the Pianist Coordinator and Pianist Manager.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with teachers by building rapport, listening and responding to their needs and being easy to approach.
  • Continue to practice piano and demonstrate continued technical proficiency.
  • Confirm the personal class and rehearsal schedule frequently.
  • Check schedule when posted and updated.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance or certification or equivalent technical ability.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience playing advanced ballet technique classes.
  • Ability to oversee multiple tasks, prioritize work and be able to meet tight deadlines.

Physical Demands:

  • Ascending or descending stairs, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs and/ or hands and arms.
  • Bending legs downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)- able to read and learn new music.
  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more).
  • Ability to hear – perceive the nature of sound.
  • Moderate physical activity performing daily activities of a musical nature.
  • Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/ handle items and work with the fingers.
  • Sitting for up to 2 hours.

Work Environment:

  • Well-lighted, heated and /or air-conditioned indoor office/production setting adequate ventilation.
  • Irregular work week Monday – Saturday with availability to work nights and weekends as necessary.
