Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is Hiring a Social Worker (Schoolwide) Near Philadelphia, PA

Reports to: Director of Student Affairs

Employment Information: Full time, 10-month, bargaining unit position, with an additional up to 10 days over summer.

Summary:

Provides schoolwide services to all students and families. Collaborates with all staff to support students and their families. Every day will bring a new and different challenge. Provides direct and indirect social work services to students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfere with their performance in school, and facilitates communication among school, home and community providers. 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work.
  • One year (or full-time equivalent) experience working with children who are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and their families.
  • Possession of or eligibility for appropriate license and Pennsylvania Department of Education certification.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language as demonstrated by an Intermediate score of 3.0 or greater on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) or its equivalent.
  • Ability to work well in teams. PSD works as a team and we all work together.
  • Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of typical child growth and development.
  • Demonstrate understanding of and experience with a culturally diverse urban population.
  • Demonstrate the ability to embed supports and services within a family’s typical routines.
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide balanced information to families in terms of language, communication and educational options.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop relationships with staff, students and families.
  • Participate and contribute to the multidisciplinary team and IEP teams for evaluations and the development of outcomes for Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Provide case management, home visits and other appropriate supports to children and families as directed by IFSPs and IEPs.
  •  Is involved with the new student enrollment process and contacts new enrolled families to obtain social histories and completes a report for the school team.
  • Responsible for monitoring student attendance and addressing attendance concerns in accordance with state truancy laws and regulations.
  • Collaborates with agencies including behavioral health agencies, Intellectual Disabilities & Office of Vocational Rehabilitation to support student success within their IEP goals and transition.
  • Works closely with and collaborates with PSD Family Resource Center to support parent engagement initiatives. 
  • Involved with student truancy and completes SAIPs (Student Attendance Improvement Plans), referrals & linkages.
  • Collaborates with outside agencies, particularly in behavioral health & mental health.
  • Possess and in-depth develop knowledge of social, mental health, medical, educational and other appropriate agency services in the community and facilitate family efforts to access these services. 
  • Assist families in obtaining appropriate community resources related to specific family needs (i.e. food, clothing, shelter, mental health services and funding sources). 
  • Collaborate with school staff in providing support to families and students related to community, social and environmental issues that affect the child’s educational program.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of current local and state regulations regarding early intervention services, school-age programs and social work practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Generally works in an office environment or family homes.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch and reach with hands and arms
  • Some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity
