Summary:

  • The Supervisor, Corporate Accounting, will work closely with the Corporate Human Resources, Penn DnA and Real Estate leadership teams in the development of financial structures, policies and measures to lead and manage business objectives and oversee the department accounting operations.. The Supervisor will provide timely and accurate reporting of financial information to the respective department directors during the monthly close process; Maintains necessary schedules and documentation for monthly closings, quarterly reviews, and annual audit; Reviews financial data for accuracy, reasonableness, and completeness; Applies GAAP Financial Reporting Standards without exception; Provides financial support to Controller and Department Directors as required.
  • Technical skills and abilities must include a deep knowledge of accounting principles and concepts related to financial reporting and budgeting and the ability to analyze, compare, interpret, and suggest solutions to accounting and finance issues while maintaining great attention to detail and accuracy. Dedication to the timely completion of all tasks, effective listening skills, and the ability to ask educated questions at appropriate times. Inclination to be a self-motivator and to apply creativity and conceptualization skills effectively with management. Promote a positive attitude toward other staff members. The ability to work independently and also manage the respective members of the Financial Reporting team. Good command of the English language. Demonstrate punctuality and meet set department deadlines. Maintain a professional attitude at all times. Communicate effectively with assigned department financial managers and staff. Consistently adhere to departmental standards for a professional office environment. Constantly be aware of and adhere to UPHS employment policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible and accountable for having financial statements and statistical results accurately and consistently reported and prepared on an accrual basis in conformity with general accounting principles and in accordance with Penn Medicine’s policies and procedures.
  • Leads the respective departments’ fiscal year Capital and Operating Expense budgeting process to be in alignment with Penn Medicine goals and targets. 
  • Review/coordinate/prepare internally and externally distributed financial data, i.e. profit/(loss) analysis, surveys and other request for accuracy and reasonableness.
  • Oversees the monthly financial reporting and variance processes for the department. This includes: review of department income statement and department balance sheet financial statements.
  • Accountable to maintain a system of internal/business controls which are designed to provide reasonable assurance to Penn Medicine Management and Trustees that the information for the department is accurate, timely and reliable.
  • Plans and projects departmental expenses. Works with department leadership to identify trends or potential issues.
  • Communicates to department to discuss potential impact and create remediation plans.
  • Assign and organize work assignments of staff including setting priorities and identifying problem areas.
  •  Accountable for annual budget and current year projections including department and division P&L projections in a manner to project sufficient detail. In addition, prepares a three-year department/division level projection.
  • Perform special projects as required. Work with other Entities in resolving problems related to standard financial issues and practices
  • Works closely with department leadership to prepare business plans for new business ventures, including financial accountability, resource management, and evaluation of implementation requirements, costs and return on investment.
  • Assists and supports department leadership in strategic and operational planning initiatives.
  • Interview, hire, discipline, instruct, train, guide and counsel all employees under direct supervision.
  • Keep Management informed with timely communications and provide a customer service orientation of financial services to all constituencies.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Credentials:

  • Certified Public Accountant (Preferred)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (Required)
  • 4 years of experience in general accounting, monthly financial close process and/or financial reporting experience (Required)
  • 0-1 years Supervisory/managerial experience (Required)
  • Master's degree in Business Administration or related field (Preferred)

Skills/Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills 
  •  Establishes and maintains good working relationships and partnerships 
  •  Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Regulations 
  • Self-motivated; ability to multi-task and manage rapidly changing priorities 
  • Experience with Lawson (or similar) General Ledger system 
  •  Experience with Hyperion Reporting and Budget System (or similar) 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, Power Point and Outlook 
  •  Problem solving – skillfully lead groups through problem solving situations 
  •  Project Management – ability to develop and follow process
