Job Title: Loss Control Manager

Job Summary: The Loss Control Manager is responsible for leading a team of Loss Control professionals that designs, implements, and manages loss control programs and policies aimed at reducing accidents/injuries and financial losses of policyholders. The Loss Control Manager will work closely with various departments to identify potential risks, develop strategies to mitigate them, and monitor the effectiveness of loss prevention measures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, direct and control activities of assigned Loss Control staff in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical support to underwriting, field staff, and other departments, and establish best practices.
  • Provide training to staff on technical subjects as requested by management.
  • Aid in loss investigations as requested by the claim department.
  • Provide management technical advice and assistance in establishing organizational policies of assigned authority.
  • Design and implement comprehensive training programs in loss prevention and control.
  • Responsible for the quality and quantity of work produced by assigned staff.
  • Work collaboratively with Underwriting to review risk submissions to ensure that they include adequate information to complete a meaningful risk evaluation based on contemplated program coverages.
  • Provide risk assessments of typical property, general liability, and auto liability exposures based on expected loss frequency and severity for specific risks.
  • Based on review of loss experience/history, and through loss analysis activities, provide the Underwriting feedback on how well a specific risk mirrors expected loss performance for both new business and renewals.
  • Conducts large-loss reviews and recommends corrective action to mitigate/prevent future occurrences.
  • Provide information on catastrophic exposures contemplated by class of risk, geographical location, nature of occupancy, employee/third party concentration.
  • Respond to specific questions and provide support on Technical/scientific (safety standards or operational processes), emerging liabilities.
  • Support account profitability by identifying appropriate risk control services, activities, and/or interventions.
  • Support account acquisition through general marketing and account specific sales presentations. Provide pre-renewal monitoring and feedback to underwriting and field staff
  • Assist in building, maintaining, and delivering established vendor services in accordance with technical and financial requirements.
  • When required, respond to customer service requests, meeting agreed upon needs and building customer relationships to support account retention.
  • Technical Job Knowledge - broad risk based industry background; risk management skills, risk control disciplines (ergo, IH, etc.); broad based background and understanding of casualty. insurance coverages (workers compensation, auto liability, and strong skills in general and products liability); risk control regulatory & compliance issues and property experience (preferred).
  • Teamwork- ability to develop relationships/collaborate with internal and external partners/customers.
  • Ability for frequent travel throughout the United States to service multi-state accounts and participate in internal meetings and industry functions.
  • Manage Loss Control budget. 
  • Provide guidance/consultation for PLM’s internal safety program.
  • Develop/maintain emergency response/business continuity plans and protocols to ensure the organization is prepared for various types of crises and disasters.
  • Be active in continuous professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Has demonstrated skills and results in strategic and operational planning, leadership and relationship building, consulting and customer service, effective written and oral communication, and operating results.
  • Other skills required include building a diverse and inclusive work force, strategic mindset, business acumen and the ability to set direction, inspire/motivate, build relationships, work cross-functionally by engaging and motivating people, and respond effectively to varied and intense challenges
  • Bachelor's degree in risk management, safety management, business administration, or a related field. Equivalent experience and professional certifications may be substituted
  • Certifications and/or Registrations CSP, ARM, CPCU, or other professional designation are desired
  • 10 years of experience (with 5 years people leadership/management) in loss/risk control with a proven track record of success. Wood-niche experience (lumber, building material dealers, sawmills, manufacturing, distribution, and retail) is preferred. 
  • Strong knowledge of property loss control, safety regulations and standards, including NFPA, ICC/IBC codes, OSHA, and other relevant best-practice & regulatory standards
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Clean Driver’s license
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of different personalities.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficiency in data analysis and the use of relevant software tools
