Peninsula Community Health Services is Hiring a Medical Assistant Apprentice Near Bremerton, WA

Interviews for this position will be held through June 6th, 2024 and the start date for this position is June 24th OR July 15th, 2024.

The Medical Assistant Apprentice will enter a Washington Department of Labor (DOL) registered Apprenticeship Program with Peninsula Community Health Services (PCHS), in conjunction with the Washington Association for Community Health (WACH). PCHS covers the cost of tuition and materials for each participant.

The Medical Assistant Apprentice functions under the supervision of a Medical Assistant Certified (MA-C) coach and within the scope of practice that the MA-C has determined is appropriate based upon the education and skill requirements of the WACH Apprenticeship Program and as defined by the Washington Administrative Code.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performance of the following duties are based on completion of the modules and successful performance of the required number of skills repetitions under observation of their coach.

  • A Medical Assistant Apprentice will perform the following duties:
    • Obtaining and recording patient history
    • Telephone and in-person screening limited to intake and gathering of patient information
    • Maintaining medication and immunization records
    • Performing accurate and correct diagnostic testing including hearing, vision, and EKG
    • Performing point of care CLIA waved testing
    • Capillary blood withdrawal, venipuncture and injections (intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular)
    • Collecting specimen and processing to outside lab
    • Procedures for sterilizing equipment and instruments
    • Assisting in sterile procedures, taking vital signs, preparing patients for exam
    • Practicing standard precautions
  • Familiar with using electronic health record (Ex. Athena)
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct reports.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (required by the apprenticeship program)
  • Active CPR Certification (required)
  • Valid driver’s license (required)
  • One (1) year of customer service experience (preferred)

    Benefits and Compensation

    PCHS offers a wide variety of benefits through a customizable cafeteria plan. In addition to receiving employer-paid basic life and long-term disability insurance, eligible employees can choose between several employer-subsidized health insurance plans and YMCA and Costco memberships. PCHS also offers a 403(b)-retirement plan, pet insurance, and legal and long-term care plans, among others.

    For pay equity purposes, PCHS calculates salaries based on a wage scale that incorporates a standardized approach to compensation. Accordingly, PCHS does not engage in salary negotiations for non-provider staff.

    Pay: $18.00/hr. (0-1000 apprenticeship hours complete), $18.50/hr. (1001-2000 apprenticeship hours complete)

    Once apprenticeship program is complete (2000 hours) starting pay will increase to at least $18.70/hr.

    Skills

    Must have excellent communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team; to receive and respond well to feedback. Possess strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; time-management and organizational skills, including being punctual, responsive, and efficient. Perform job with professionalism and good judgment.

    Work Environment and Physical Demands

    With multiple locations and settings, PCHS’ work environment and physical demands vary greatly depending on the employee’s role. Essential job functions include the following: The employee is required to talk, hear, see, smell, sit and stand. The employee is frequently required to move around the facility; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Employees may be exposed to mechanical parts and moderate noise levels. Reasonable accommodations may be available to individuals with disabilities to perform their essential job functions.
