ORGANIZATION

The Partnership for Public Service is the only nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to building a better government and a stronger democracy. We believe that our future and our democracy depend on our ability to solve big problems—and that we need an effective federal government to do so. For more than 20 years, we have helped make this vision a reality, helping our government—the public institution most fundamental to our democracy—address current and future challenges.

Our work is strategic, fast-paced and guided by our values:

  • Passion for public service and our work toward a more effective government
  • People who promote a culture of learning, leadership, collaboration, inclusion and respect
  • Persistence to drive change, take strategic risks and deliver results
  • Promise to be trustworthy, nonpartisan and fiscally responsible

We hire smart and friendly people who are great at what they do and good to one another in the process.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Partnership’s Center for Presidential Transition serves as the premier nonpartisan source of information and resources to help presidential candidates and their teams lay the groundwork for a new administration or for a president’s second term.

This role will lead crucial pieces of the Center for Presidential Transition’s portfolio, oversee day-to-day project management, and work effectively with internal partners and external stakeholders so that the Center’s priorities are well managed, make an impact and advance the Partnership’s mission. Leading up to 2024, the Center is focused on creating new resources for the administration and future transition teams, conducting research on timely topics, capturing lessons learned from 2020, pursuing process reforms and onboarding political appointees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all aspects of a portfolio of work related to improving the federal government, including supervising staff to ensure effective implementation of initiatives, shaping project concepts and scope, developing and executing budgets, managing product or program creation and review, and tracking and measuring progress toward stated goals.
  • Support the Center Director in managing the planning and execution of all Center activities and projects, including setting the strategic vision, managing budgets, overseeing projects and project teams, evaluating performance and building the capacity of the team.
  • Manage complex, cross-organizational project teams to ensure effective implementation of programs and initiatives.
  • Advance the Partnership and Center’s mission, profile and brand by building and managing relationships at the highest level of the administration, federal agencies, presidential campaigns and transition teams, providing thought leadership on emerging topics, identifying potential areas of organizational growth, and developing prospective initiatives.
  • Identify and help to secure partners and funders for future work; drafting grant and corporate proposals to gain additional financial support; and writing periodic reports to document accomplishments, progress and emerging opportunities.
  • Lead and motivate project teams, identifying areas for individual and collective development.
  • Identify and act upon lessons learned to continuously improve programming.
  • Represent the Partnership/Center at external meetings and events, as needed.

KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, with proven management and leadership capabilities and a high degree of initiative and willingness to navigate new situations.
  • Ability and desire to remain scrupulously nonpartisan and committed to the mission of the Partnership and goals of the Center for Presidential Transition.
  • Ability to design and deliver a variety of programming related to organizational priorities.
  • Ability to lead teams to drive results and impact.
  • Highly collaborative, with exceptional ability to coordinate across internal teams, external partners and other stakeholder groups.
  • Consistent, sound judgment and decision-making skills; ability to identify potential problems, analyze issues and provide proactive solutions.
  • Excellent facilitation and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Political savvy with the ability to lead a team, manage people effectively and build networks of support internally and externally.
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, proactivity and agility.
  • Ability to handle challenges and obstacles with tact, diplomacy and flexibility.
  • Adept at working in a fast-paced and high-energy environment.
  • Commitment to the values of public service; the mission of the Partnership for Public Service; and diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum eight to ten years of relevant work experience with progressive responsibility, substantial project management and supervisory experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master's degree preferred, or equivalent professional work or military experience.
  • Experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders and funders required.
  • Experience building consensus among a variety of stakeholders toward a common goal required.
  • Prior experience working in federal agencies, Congress, White House or on presidential campaigns strongly preferred.
