Park Dist Of Highland Park is Hiring an Aquatics Supervisor - Programs FT Near Highland, IL

Summary: Under the direction of the Manager of Aquatics, the Aquatics Supervisor – Programs is responsible for all Aquatic operations at the Recreation Center of Highland Park indoor pool and Hidden Creek Aqua Park outdoor pool. The Aquatics Supervisor – Programs has complete oversight of the Learn to Swim Program, private swim lessons, camp swim lessons, and Aquatics Summer After Camp. The Aquatics Supervisor – Programs will work collaboratively with the Lakefront Aquatics Supervisor and be responsible for cross training staff to work at both outdoor operations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate all aquatics staff, including seasonal supervisors, lifeguards, learn to swim instructors and private lesson instructors.
  • Responsible for overseeing a comprehensive swim lesson program, including private lessons and learn to swim programs.
  • Conduct regular certification trainings and in-service trainings for all aquatics staff.
  • Maintain accurate records of training dates, agendas, attendance, and staff certifications.
  • Work with the Aquatics Manager to prepare, monitor and evaluate budgets for aquatics.
  • Oversee the Seasonal Manager to implement schedules for all pool staff, including lifeguards, learn to swim instructors, swim school coordinator and private lesson instructors.
  • Prepare and deliver staff evaluations annually or at the end of summer for seasonal staff.
  • Responsible for working with the Aquatics staff in the development, implementation, and ongoing supervision of customer service standards for all staff to ensure a high level of customer service.
  • Complete all required paperwork and accurately review and approve the aquatic staff payroll.
  • Responsible for the ongoing supervision of program evaluations, surveys, and other means of gathering feedback and quality control to ensure participants needs and expectations are being met.
  • Work with the Communications and Registration Departments to develop and ensure accurate information in the aquatic section of the brochure, website, electronic marketing, posters and flyers.
  • Regularly communicate with the Recreation Center Management regarding member-related projects, concerns or information relative to the coordination and maintenance of aquatic operations.
  • Work with the Aquatics Manager on updating and creating aquatic policies and procedures as well as keeping the manuals updated.
  • Work with the Safety Coordinator to establish and follow risk management policies to ensure compliance with PDRMA requirements.
  • Assist Manager with RFP's and Bids as needed.
  • Work with District Wide Rental Manager in scheduling pool parties and rentals and maintain rentals agreements for outside District users and affiliate groups.
  • In coordination with Aquatics Supervisor-Lakefront, oversee Park Ambassador Team.
  • Assists with providing indoor Aquatics Desk coverage between the months of October and March
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Manages a team staff of lifeguard supervisors, lifeguards, swimming instructors and additional support staff as needed. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, delegating and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university with a degree in Business, Recreation or Sports & Exercise Facility Management or related field or experience in Park Administration or five years progressive successful experience in the field and training. Experience should not be measured in time alone; quality of previous experience as well as its similarity to the needs of the current position should be a determining factor. Must have 2-4 years of management or supervisory experience. Preference given to experience in aquatics and certifications as a Lifeguard Instructor.

A thorough knowledge of the theory and philosophy of recreation for leisure time and the ability to interpret this philosophy to others in the form of planning, organizing and supervising programming and personnel. Ability to apply education, training and work experience to improve performance of organization.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard (or ability to obtain within first 90 days of employment)
  • Lifeguard Instructor (or ability to obtain within first 90 days of employment)
  • Water Safety Instructor (preferred)
  • CPO and/or AFO (or ability to obtain as requested)
  • Valid Drivers License

Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday with nights and weekend required as needed

Classification: Full- Time Exempt
