    Music Teacher as part of the music department teaching band, orchestra, chorus and/or general music in elementary or junior high grades and assist in other after school programs as assigned.
    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and/or choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to pupils. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
    • Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and general subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
    • Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
    • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
    • Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
    • Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
    • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
    • Evaluates each pupil's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.
    • Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community.
    • Applies knowledge of national, state, and district procedures, and limitations set on performances.
    • Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aides; maintains required inventory and music library records to prevent loss or damage to equipment.
    • Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
    • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
    • Cooperates with school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and/or civic functions.
    • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
    • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
    • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
    • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Valid California Teacher Credential with CLAD/CTEL Authorization
    • Bachelor's Degree with major or minor in music (Master's degree desired)
    • Ability to play at least one standard orchestra instrument ( if instrumental teacher) or ability to sing (if choral teacher)
    • Knowledge of musical structure, form, terminology, and conventions. Working knowledge of developmentally appropriate repertoire.Conducting skills, correct vocal production skills, and/or pedagogical techniques for all band/orechestra instruments. Communication skills and aural training to detect a discrepancy in pitch and intonation. Piano accompanying skills.
    • Appearance, grooming, and personality establish a desirable model for pupils.
    • Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health.
    • Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher.
    • Must be able to adapt to working in spaces not normally used for group instruction when regular classroom space is not available.
    SALARY AND TERMS OF SERVICE:
    Salary according to teacher's placement on the Certificated Salary Schedule. Placement on the schedule is dependent upon qualifications/previous experience. Prepaid family dental, medical, and vision insurance plans; life insurance plan for employee only.
