TITLE: ASSISTANT FOOD SERVICE MANAGER

CLASSIFICATION: LEAD FOOD SERVICE ASSISTANT I

JOB GOAL: To ensure the safe and efficient operation of the school cafeteria for the ultimate health, wellness and benefit of the students. To manage, coordinate and oversee day-to-day food service operations at an assigned school site in the absence of the School Food Service Manager. To provide work direction to assigned personnel.

REPORTS TO: School Food Service Manager/District Food Service Director/School Principal

SUPERVISES: Food Service employees in school cafeteria

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • A minimum of 2 years of food service experience with competence in food preparation, mathematics, and record keeping.
  • Leadership, management skills and personality traits for working with team members.
  • Demonstrate or develop skills in food preparation, following standardized recipes, use and care of commercial equipment.
  • Positive attitude toward students, staff, faculty and school.
  • Meet the requirement 702 KAR 6:045, which prescribes necessary qualifications & training of school food service staff.
  • Has met the requirements of the Criminal Record Check as specified by Kentucky state law.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Basic operations of a school cafeteria.
  • Standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements.
  • Principles/methods of computing food quantity, food service preparation, serving and storage required by rotating menus.
  • Health, Sanitation, and Safety regulations including practices of handling, preparing, cooking, baking and serving food.
  • HACCP guidelines
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Principles of training and providing work direction while using interpersonal skills such as tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
  • Read and write at a level required for successful job performance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the School Cafeteria Manager in planning, organizing and leading the food service operations at an

assigned school site; assure the serving and storage of food is in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.

  • Assist, prepare, and maintain assigned daily or monthly records and reports accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Oversee serving of meals to students, teachers and other staff; participate in food serving and preparation as needed;

assure compliance with serving size requirements.

  • Assure proper cleanliness and maintenance of equipment and supplies used in the cafeteria; assure compliance with

health, safety, and sanitation regulations.

  • Receive, inspect, verify and accept delivery of food and supplies; utilize proper methods of storing foods.
  • Confer with the food service manager regarding cafeteria needs, conditions and menu changes.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding the identity of those students who are participating in the free and reduced-price

meal programs and students who have allergies or special diets.

  • Participate in the district in-service meetings and training programs for school food service personnel.
  • Report accidents and refer potential safety hazards to the cafeteria manager or Food Service Director.
  • Prepare, cook, bake and serve a variety of foods in quantity at an assigned school site; assist in other food preparation

duties as directed; maintain facilities in a clean and sanitary condition

  • Assist in determining appropriate quantity of food items for cooking and baking; adjust and extend recipes as needed;

maintain food quality standards including appearance, and nutritional requirements.

  • Train and provide work direction to others as directed by manager or Food Service Director.
  • Monitor temperatures of food to assure safety and quality standards are met; monitor water temperatures to assure

proper temperature for sanitizing.

  • Clean cafeteria equipment, utensils and appliances and store food supplies; assure compliance with kitchen sanitation

and safety procedures and regulations; clean refrigerators and storerooms as required.

  • Assist and utilize proper methods in storing unused food and supplies; dispose of unusable leftovers.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of standard kitchen machines and equipment including slicer, chopper, mixer, steamer,

dishwasher, electric warmer, range, oven,combi-oven, cash register, dishwasher and other cafeteria equipment as required.

  • Record amounts of food sold, and monies collected as assigned; assist with inventory and maintain routine records as

directed; prepare records of foods cooked and foods left over.

  • Prepare and bake food for special events as needed; assist at banquets or special events as required.
  • Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours.
  • Assist in other food service areas as needed; collect money and make correct change.
  • Performs other duties that may not specifically be covered in this general job description, as assigned by the

School Food Service Manager/Food Service Director/Principal.

  • Acts in accordance with the by-laws and policies as set forth by the Owensboro Board of Education, KRS and KAR,

and applicable Federal laws and regulations.

  • Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Owensboro Public Schools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor/outdoor environment. Required to go in and out of walk in freezer and refrigerator. Requires working with or near the public, parents, and children and will be subject to heat, cold, sounds, scents, and other related environmental factors.

Physical Demands: (example)

  • Lift up to 50 lbs, bend, reach, stand for long periods of time, and walk throughout a typical workday.
  • Hand and finger dexterity.
  • Repetitive movement.
