POSITION TITLE: Senior Accountant

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Accounting Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for all areas related to the preparation of financial statements, administration of accounting systems and processes, and assisting in annual budget and audit processes.

 

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions

  1.  Demonstrate and promote Opaa!’s Core Values of “Act in the Best Interest of the students, schools and communities we serve, Be honest in everything we do, Have a passion to serve others, Commit to continuous improvement”.
  2. Lead the preparation and distribution of monthly financial reporting package and statistical reports. Ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in Opaa!’s financial reporting. Provide revisions and enhancements to reporting package as needed.
  3. Maintain the integrity of the general ledger by reconciling accounts, posting journal entries, and performing month-end and year-end closing procedures. Maintain chart of accounts in Great Plains.
  4. Investigate and report variances compared to budget and prior year. Perform detailed analysis of variances between budget and actual as needed. Respond to executive and/or field inquiries regarding statistical and financial results.
  5. Assist in the development of the annual budget process and provide training and support to the field as needed.
  6. Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, providing guidance and support to facilitate their professional development.
  7. Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, regulations, and internal policies. Assist in the coordination of annual CPA audits and provide support to auditors as needed.
  8. Maintain focus on continuous improvement and solutions by recommending systems, process, and internal control improvements to senior management.
  9. Provide support for Accounts Receivable escalations and billing inquiries.
  10. Provide support for Accounts Payable escalations and billing inquiries.
  11. Manage corporate accounts including Amex and Wisely card funding & administration.
  12. Additional duties as assigned.

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, kneel, and sit. Occasionally required to stoop, push, pull, feel, grasp, and reach with hands and arms.

2. The employee must exert over 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or be able to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to 35 pounds.

3. Specific vision abilities required by this job include concentrated attention, close vision, far vision, and ability to bring objects into sharp focus.

Working Conditions: Working conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

3. Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold.

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor Degree or equivalent work experience

Experience: 

  • Five to seven years of experience in a similar position
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Strong follow-up skills.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills.
  • Strong ability to integrate and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with all levels of the organization. Able to write business correspondence and memos.
  • In-depth understanding of financial statements and cost accounting metrics.
  • Ability to identify trends and drivers of financial results.
  • In-depth understanding of MS Excel, proficiency in other Office applications including MS Access and PowerPoint
  • Basic understanding of accounting software and report builders.
  • Knowledge of Great Plains, Prophix, Power BI a plus
  • Must be able to appropriately handle confidential information.
  • Must be able to travel, as required (est. 5% - 10%)

License(s)/Certification(s) Required: MBA / CPA a plus
