About the Position

Reporting to the Anesthesiologist Assistant Program Director, the Assistant Program Director (a 12 month, non-tenure position) combines faculty and administrative responsibilities in order to ensure the efficient operation of the didactic and clinical phases of the program as needed. This position requires the individual to assist in assuring compliance with Programmatic assessment, University policies and procedures and identifying competencies for the AA Program that reflect the knowledge and skills necessary for the successful completion of the Program, CAAHEP accreditation, passing of the NCCAA board examinations, and professional practice. This is a 1.0 FTE position eligible for full benefits.

Areas of responsibility and duties include but are not limited to:

Administration & Faculty

  • Assists in the recruitment of students utilizing CASAA working with the Program Director, Program Coordinator and the AA Admissions Committee.
  • Participates and assists with the interview and application process.
  • In conjunction with the Program Director, AA faculty and staff, and the Vice President of Academic Affairs, establishes criteria for admissions, curriculum content and performance criteria for the students.
  • Assists in identifying areas of budgetary need and allocation of resources.
  • Interacts with the faculty and administration to promote the Program's goals and academic development.
  • Oversees and recommends appropriate Information Technology in order to enhance faculty and student experiences and achieve program goals.
  • Provides leadership for the formulation and revision of policies, procedures and objectives, as needed for the Program
  • Assists in the recruiting, development and maintenance of principle faculty, adjunct faculty, staff, and clinical sites and preceptors as needed.
  • Assists when necessary in the development of the didactic and clinical phase of the curriculum including, but not limited to, scheduling of students, assessment, obtaining affiliation agreements and other paperwork as needed.
  • Serves on University and Program committees as requested or designated and works effectively with academic support services offices to address and represent student and programmatic needs.
  • Maintains appropriate student and administrative records.
  • Participates in local and national organizations to insure Program excellence and appropriateness of the curriculum and instruction.
  • Participates in scholarly activities in order to ensure personal growth.
  • Assists with the continuous collection and analysis of pertinent data necessary for self-study/accreditation and quality improvement which may include Didactic and Clinical Course performance, Student Evaluations, Mock NCCAA exam performance, exit interviews, NCCAA performance, graduate surveys and other items as determined appropriate.
  • Assist in Mentoring of Faculty to the Platforms/software used in the assessment processes throughout the curriculum.
  • Creates an atmosphere conducive to faculty, and staff productivity and respect.
  • Works in conjunction with the AA Program Director, faculty, staff, students and the University Administration to help ensure that the AA program achieves and maintains continuing CAAHEP Accreditation.
  • Represent the ODU Anesthesiologist Assistant program with professionalism throughout contacts with faculty, students, and community health partners.
  • Performs other appropriate administrative duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Students

  • Assists with new student orientation, including pertinent communications with accepted students as appropriate.
  • Serves as faculty liaison to students.
  • Identify and support student scholarship as appropriate.
  • Assist and/or develop appropriate remediation plans as necessary.
  • Assist in mentoring of students and development of individualized learning plans and remediation processes utilized throughout the curriculum.
  • Serves as an academic and personal advisor to designated students throughout their tenure in the Program.
  • Assist in the recruitment, development and maintenance of adjunct didactic and clinical faculty.
  • Tracks student progress and acts accordingly in regards to strengths and weaknesses and makes recommendations for At Risk Student interventions to faculty, document meetings with students as well as recommendations for the AA Progress and Promotion Committee.
  • Aids students in professional development as necessary, including, but not limited to, resume development, interview and other professional activities.
  • Assists students with administrative licensing/registration activities prior to and after graduation.
  • Tracks and maintains current student files as outlined by the Program.
  • Performs other appropriate student activities as assigned by the Program Director.

Instruction/Curriculum

  • In conjunction with the Program Director, Clinical Coordinator, and Program Coordinator reviews the policy and procedure manuals at least on a yearly basis and more frequently as needed.
  • Participates in teaching responsibilities relevant to area of expertise and as assigned throughout the program.
  • Serves as course coordinator or co-coordinator of courses in the Program as deemed appropriate.
  • Assists in scheduling and facilitating clinical observations and service experiences for students as needed.
  • Assists in development and administration of appropriate course assessments, summative evaluations and practical comprehensive exams as appropriate during didactic phase, and assists as needed for students in clinical phase of program.
  • Assist in scheduling, tracking and assessment of adjunct instructors and guest lecturers evaluations by students and makes appropriate recommendations to the Program Director and Faculty.
  • Performs periodic site visits to students on clinical rotation as appropriate.
  • Participates in the evaluation components of the designated areas of the clinical rotations and communicates grading components to the Clinical Coordinator.
  • Participates in the Curricular Mapping of the NCCAA Content and Task Area Blueprints, AA professional competencies and the CAAHEP standards and assists in formulating appropriate curricular modifications.
  • Completes Course Assessment Forms and Faculty Assessment Form and participates in assessment and evaluation of curriculum as assigned throughout the program.
  • Performs other appropriate job related duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Qualifications

  • If the candidate is an Anesthesiologist Assistant, then they must be a graduate of an accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant Program with Master's degree or higher in a related discipline, with a minimum of 2-years of clinical practice as an AA, hold NCCAA certification, and current state licensure.
  • If the candidate is a physician then they must be a graduate of an accredited Doctor of Osteopathic or Medical Doctor Program and possess a current State License by the Ohio Medical Board with a minimum of 2 years of clinical practice experience.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  • Collaborative approach to education and clinical medicine.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students, staff, faculty, health care professionals and the public.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Sensitivity to the expectations of students, staff, faculty, health care professionals and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team of highly motivated individuals.
  • Honesty, integrity, and commitment to maintaining high professional standards.
