Job Description: Classroom Behavior Specialist

The Classroom Behavior Specialist is responsible for the students’ social-emotional well-being in the classroom. His/her role is to implement the school’s behavior support strategies in the classroom, and on field trips. The Classroom Behavior Specialist also teaches the SEL curriculum to his/her students. The Classroom Behavior Specialist will work closely with the administration, staff, specialists, and the students’ families to ensure the optimal development of each student.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement the School’s social-emotional learning, executive functioning, and behavioral support interventions in the classroom, and on field trips.
  • Ensure that the strategies are tailored for each student, working with the parents, other specialists, and School Psychologist to understand the student’s underlying needs and issues.
  • Teach explicit/implicit SEL curriculum in the classroom.
  • Engage in long- and short-term planning addressing individual needs of each student.
  • Develop performance metrics for students’ SEL Success Plans.
  • Evaluate students’ progress and prepare bi-weekly individual student achievement reports for parents and administration.
  • Present oneself as an integral member of the educational team: lead by example; contribute to an expectation of excellence; motivate fellow employees to maintain best efforts and produce their best work; take the initiative to research new programs/policies/ideas/events; and cultivate a contagious enthusiasm for our mission.
  • Effectively communicate to staff, parents, students, and community members in a way that models teamwork, encourages cooperative interaction among employees, supports collaboration, and promotes a high level of open and honest communication.
  • Express oneself clearly and confidently orally and in writing.
  • Speak publicly in an effective manner in order to represent the School at community events.
  • Act as an ambassador to the School and uphold a standard of excellence and professionalism in all interactions with parents, prospective parents, and other community members, whether representing the school or in private interactions.
  • Maintain a workable level of organization and preparation for the classroom as well as for meetings, presentations, and events.
  • Perform other duties, as deemed appropriate, by the Program Administrator.
  • QMHS certified or Eligible

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a behavioral specialist or similar role
  • An unflappable ability to stay calm and focused in the face of big behaviors.
  • An ability to think quickly on one’s feet to analyze the possible cause and function of a behavior and the best intervention in the moment.
  • Knowledge of social-emotional learning and executive functioning. .
  • A willingness and ability to learn behavior management methods
  • A sense of humor, genuine love for children, and deep appreciation for our students.
  • An ability to make a genuine connection with each student.
  • A belief that all youngsters have the natural ability to succeed at high levels of learning and it is the behaviors and actions of the adults in the School that nurture, develop, and encourage each and every student.
  • An ability to build caring and considerate relationships that demonstrate regard and respect for all people.
  • A belief that decisions should be made from the perspective of putting students’ needs first.
  • An ability to resolve student problems and make decisions based on developmental appropriateness, educational research, and an understanding of the issues underlying an individual student’s behavior.
  • An ability to get along well with other staff.
  • An ability to conduct oneself in a way that maintains the integrity of the position and the School.
  • An ability to adhere to professional codes of ethics: maintain trust and confidentiality; model legally and morally responsible actions at all times; treat individuals with fairness, dignity, and respect; and model the core values of the 45 day program

Compensation: $20-25/hour $41,600 $52,000

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Psychology, or related field

Three years in working with at-risk youth

Background in grades 6-12, Qualified Mental Health Specialist (QMHS) certified or eligible

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Psychology or related field

5 years’ experience as a Behavior Specialist, with 2 years in a lead/supervising role. Experience in a school setting preferred

Minimum Qualifications:
