JOB DESCRIPTION

FLSA Status:Exempt-Salaried JOB TITLE:DIRECTOR OF NURSING-SUB

Department:Nursing SUB ACUTE-LTC SERVICES

Reports To:Administrator

This job description, defining qualifications, primary (essential) and secondary (non-essential) functions, responsibilities and duties, is intended as a guideline for the employee and manager.The duties listed here are not considered to be all inclusive.The employee in this position performs these and other duties as required, although not listed, which may be assigned by his supervisor or facility Administrator/designee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Management Function Requirements:

ØKnowledge of compliance with Department of Public Health Guidelines 2023

ØAssumes responsibility for the development of nursing service objectives, performance standards of nursing practice for each category of nursing personnel.

ØAssumes accountability for the development, organization and implementation of approved policies and procedures.

ØDirects, evaluates and supervises all resident care and initiates corrective action as necessary.

ØConducts daily resident rounds, initiates corrective action as necessary, reports problems to the Administrator.

ØDirects implementation of "Resident Bill of Rights".

ØMonitors nursing service educational programs to meet the needs of the staff and residents.

ØConducts staff meetings with all shifts for purposes of planning, coordinating and implementing nursing service policies and procedures.

ØDemonstrates consistent ability to manage nursing service problems, emergency situations, and initiate "life saving" measures within the scope of nursing practice.

ØAssumes responsibility for nursing service compliance to federal, state, JCAHO standards and local regulations.

ØConsistently operates nursing service within budget guidelines established.

ØActs as an intergral member of the Continuous Quality Improvement team, develops quality indicators and reports monthly.

ØDirects allocation of nursing service equipment and supplies within the facility and establishes guidelines for efficient economical utilization of supplies and equipment.

ØInsures availability of equipment for nursing personnel.

ØAssesses equipment and supply needs and makes recommendations to the Administrator.

ØDirects and supervises scheduling of employees within established guidelines for allocation of nursing service personnel on duty.

ØRecommends the number and level of personnel to be employed to the Administrator.

ØConducts interviews, hires nursing service employees, conducts counseling interviews and initiates disciplinary actions as necessary.

ØPrepares written employee performance evaluations and initiates recommendations for salary increases, promotions, or terminations.

ØConsistently makes level of care determinations, based on physician's recommendations and plan of care, to assure a favorable "waiver of liability" status for the facility.

ØCommunicates daily with nursing personnel providing clear, concise information as well as specific assignments.

ØAssumes responsibility in the absence of the Administrator.

ØParticipates with administration, social services and rehab services in the selection process for potential admissions.

ØParticipates in the development of a written staffing plan.

ØParticipates in the development and maintenance of job descriptions for all nursing service personnel.

Patient Care Requirements:

ØTakes inquiries for resident placement as assigned by the Administrator and initiates procedures for proper placement of residents and level of care determinations.

ØAccepts responsibility for safety of residents under his/her supervision.

ØFollows all Resident's Rights policies at all times.

ØListens to residents', families', or physicians' concerns and initiates corrective action and/or reports concerns to the Administrator.

ØDirects and organizes required documentation for Medicare and individual reimbursement systems.

ØMakes management reports and special assignments and adheres to established time schedules.

ØReviews the total clinical record for accuracy and completeness periodically.

ØAssures that each patient/resident's interdisciplinary plan of care, including discharge plan is maintained and implemented.

ØOversees and coordinates nursing services with other professional disciplines, i.e., O.T., P.T., Speech, etc. by assisting and/or supervising in the development of individualized patient care plans, stressing rehabilitative and restorative activities and instruction.

ØParticipates with other professional staff in developing and implementing policies for patient/ resident care.

Safety & Health Requirements:

ØIdentifies safety hazards and initiates corrective action.

ØObserves infection control procedures.

ØFollows all facility safety policies and procedures.

ØProfessional Development Requirements:

ØConsistently demonstrates responsibility, accountability and dependability.

ØConsistently works cooperatively with facility administration, nursing personnel, ancillary personnel, all facility departments and consultants.

ØComes to work clean and neat and consistently presents a professional appearance.

ØAccepts assigned duties in a cooperative manner.Strives for continuous self-improvement and institutes continued education, formal and self-directed.

ØConsistently maintains awareness of changes in rules and regulations effecting nursing facility operations.

General Requirements:

ØDemonstrates knowledge and understanding of the impact of disability upon an individual's, as well as families' physical, emotional, social, economic, and vocational status, taking into consideration age-related issues, and developmental levels over the life span (i.e., the adolescents' need to develop their own identity and cope with life changes; and the geriatrics' need to maintain their integrity and independence and adjust to the physiological aspects of aging), and meets competency requirements for the population served (adolescent through geriatric), as applicable to the job description.

ØParticipates in facility committee meetings and functions on committees as assigned.

ØEstablishes open lines of communication with physicians and consultants and consistently takes follow up action on recommendations.

ØAssumes accountability for all data contained in the personnel policy manual.

ØInterprets existing policies and procedures to professional and non-professional nursing personnel.

ØAccepts "On Call" status for emergencies which supervisory personnel cannot handle.

ØParticipates in the planning and implementation of the nursing service budget.

ØEstablishes good public relations with hospital discharge coordinators and social service consultants.

ØPerforms other related duties as directed by Administrator.

Prerequisites:

Education and Experience Requirements:

1.Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN required, MSN preferred.

2.Current licensure in Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse.

3.Minimum of five (10-15) years recent clinical long term care experience.

4.Minimum of three (5) years supervisory experience in a long term care facility.

5.Knowledge of managed care, geriatric nursing, PDPM reimbursement systems, OBRA, HCFA, Joint Commission Accreditation and Medicare required.

6.Knowledge in areas of management, labor relations, recruitment, budgeting and finance.

7.Current Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support in accordance with American Heart

Association or American Red Cross standards required.

8.Knowledge of growth and development across the life span required.
