Job Description:

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

PURPOSE: Provides optimum nutritional care to patients through assessing nutritional needs; developing, implementing and re-evaluating nutritional care plans; and educating patients and families. Reports to the Clinical Nutrition Manager.

GENERAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

Screens and assesses patients in a accurate and timely manner; determines patients' nutritional needs and status and provides follow-up care.

Interviews patients and/or their families to obtain history of food habits and preferences.

Monitors patients for and evaluates food/drug interaction, counsels patients when appropriate and documents in the patients' interdisciplinary care plan.

Interprets pertinent laboratory, physical and social data in medical record as it applies to nutritional care.

Instructs patients concerning diet, and monitors patients' reaction to diet.

Documents diet, diet instruction and patient's expected compliance to diet in nutrition assessment

Practices proper hand hygiene upon entering and exiting patient's room.

Adheres to proper patient identification standards when providing nutrition care.

Consults with physician regarding appropriate diet modifications.

Participates in patient rounds with patient health-care team of various services.

Counsels patient and/or their family prior to discharge concerning the preparation of special therapeutic or modified diets at home.

Informs diet office staff special food preferences for patients.

Participates in nutritional training of field placement students.

Maintains records of clinical productivity, assessments, follow-up charting, etc. as

requested by the Clinical Nutrition Manager.

May participate in Health Day, community fairs, etc. as a representative of the department.

May relieve in all areas/units as assigned.

Assists in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures, to assure the highest quality of nutritional care to patients.

Assists in the supervision of Level I and Level II Dietitians.

Reports problems to immediate supervisor and recommends ways to improve nutritional services.

Participates in the development and implementation of quality assurance/performance improvement activities as assigned.

Assists in orientation, training, supervision and evaluation of new team dietitians.

Maintains continuing education in nutrition, clinical dietetics, food service management or related areas as appropriate in order to update current knowledge and skills in the practice of dietetics and performance of assigned duties.

Qualifications:

Registration from the Commission on Dietetic Registration OR

Verification for eligibility to sit for the Registration exam AND

Successful completion of the exam within six months of hire.

Education Requirements:

Baccalaureate degree in nutritional sciences which includes courses in chemistry, nutrition and diet and disease OR

Masters degree in nutritional sciences from an accredited college or university.
