ABOUT CJA

The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not-for-profit service and research organization that operates in partnership with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. CJA is the City’s main pretrial services agency, combining operations, pilot projects, and research under one roof. CJA utilizes procedural justice practices to provide pretrial services to over 100,000 persons arrested annually in New York City. Information collected about these arrestees and subsequent case processing is maintained in the agency’s internal and externally shared database systems, which are used to conduct descriptive and evaluation research on arrestee characteristics, case processing and court outcomes, and on issues and potential reforms to criminal justice policy in New York City. CJA’s programs operate in the criminal courts and detention facilities 24 hours a day seven days a week within the 5 boroughs of NYC, employing over 270 employees, citywide.

PROGRAM SUMMARY 

CJA works to reduce jail overcrowding and unnecessary detention in New York City. CJA is the City’s main pretrial services agency, combining operations, pilot projects and research under one roof. The Queens Supervised Release Program operates in Queens Criminal Court and serves individuals of all ages who are charged with felonies and misdemeanors, and who present a substantial likelihood of detention but are at risk of failing to appear in court if released on recognizance. It provides pretrial supervision and voluntary social service referrals, including job training, employment, drug treatment, and mental health counseling. Participants remain in the community and are required to maintain face-to-face and/or telephone contact with a case manager, attend all court appearances, and avoid re-arrest. 

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager of Training and Professional Development, the Coordinator of Training and Professional Development supports the development and delivery of training to promote the continued learning and development of all staff. The Coordinator of Training & Professional Development plays an integral role on the Training Team and will help to build capacity for training at CJA. The coordinator role will have the unique opportunity to participate in supporting the growth and professional development of a fast-growing and diverse group of staff who are serving the criminal justice-involved population of NYC. Our ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge and understanding of human services work and the related professional development needs for the effective and quality delivery of service. 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Manager of Training & Professional Development in implementing overall training and professional development for staff.
  • Coordinate and facilitate training for diverse staff including social workers, case managers, peer specialist, court staff, and others as needed.
  • Support the training program to ensure newly hired staff are initially & regularly trained in various aspects of their required roles.
  • Support the development and facilitation of trainings in the following areas of expertise: Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed care, Motivational Interviewing, Intimate Partner Violence, General Case Management in human services work and other related modalities and perspectives, as needed.
  • Oversee employee attendance and performance at training; track employee feedback, success, and progress, including collection of certificates of completion.
  • Actively participating in staff meetings and ongoing training.
  • Supporting & identifying new training and development initiatives

  • Monitors training supplies at various locations and notifies supervisor when supply orders are needed promptly.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 years’ experience in a role supporting training and development with an adult population with varying cultural and life experiences, AND
  • Master’s degree required in social work, training and development, education or human services related field.
  • Alternate requirement: Bachelor’s degree in social work, training and development, education, or human services or related field and 4 years of full-time work experience.

Required Skills:

  • Experience presenting pre-established content or co-facilitating workshops with defined content to mid-sized to large groups.
  • Extremely proficient computer literacy with the ability to quickly adapt to changing technology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications required (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Experienced in training both in-person and virtually (Teams & Zoom platforms)
  • Must be flexible with schedule, ability to work in person 5 days a week as necessary for training of staff, and on a hybrid schedule of in-person 3 days a week, work from home 2 days a week when not providing training.

Desired/Preferred Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Case Management (or long-term client tracking) databases in the Social Work or Human Services field
  • Familiarity with pretrial services and NYC (New York City,) Criminal Court processes, preferred.

Knowledge Required for the Position:

  • Understands and can apply all steps in the training development & delivery process.
  • Knowledge of Needs Assessment for training development

Note: This position is expected to operate on a hybrid schedule with in-person work 3 days per week, 2 remote days with flexibility to work M-F 9-5 on any day trainings are scheduled. The successful hire must be able to assume responsibilities that are both remote and on-site, in accordance with CJA policy at the time of hire.

SALARY: $70,000

Location: New York, NY
