Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned or may arise as the needs and culture of Sacajawea Veterinary Hospital evolve.

  • Provide leadership for a team of technicians and assistants that you work with on a given shift. This may be accomplished in a variety of ways including setting a good example, coaching, training, educating, and intervening in challenging situations when necessary.
  • One-on-one mentoring and coaching of other veterinary assistants and technicians, including formal Quarterly Development Meetings.
  • Be available and approachable for questions from fellow veterinary assistants and technicians, doctors, kennel assistants, and CSRs.
  • Communicate expectations for performance, delegate tasks when needed, and guide other veterinary assistants and technicians in coordinating patient care and client communications.
  • Communicate challenges and performance problems with the Practice Manager and Medical Director and provide feedback and ideas for improvement.
  • Communicate progress of ongoing projects, challenges being addressed, and other important updates to veterinary assistants and technicians
  • Develop and oversee completion of projects benefiting the hospital, our patients, our clients, or our community, such as creating of client education, internal reference, and training resources.
  • Ensure all assistants and technicians are aware of and follow proper safety procedures, including reporting of injuries.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping for assistant and technician work areas.
  • Delegate and coordinate tasks when multiple competing needs are present.
  • Provide leadership for technician and assistant meetings, which may include scheduling/planning, development of meeting agendas, leading and moderating discussions, and coordinating resources needed for the meeting.
  • Be a liaison between staff and management and facilitate communication between various departments.
  • Refrain from negative talk, gestures, judgments, or implied attitudes that distract from patient care and client service, reflect poorly on the Hospital, or create a negative work environment.
  • Provide positive and constructive feedback to teammates in an appropriate, respectful, and helpful manner and tailor these communications to the individual’s preferred communication style.
  • Create and document Standard Operating Procedures for processes and tasks pertaining to the duties of a veterinary assistant or technician for which no document or set protocol exists. Improve upon those that have already been documented.
  • Other duties as asked or identified to keep hospital running smoothly.
  • Take ownership of various tasks or projects upon mutual agreement with Management – such as ongoing assignment of tech/assistant roles, maintenance of sharps disposal, or development of training materials.

Personnel

  • Monitor staff throughout the shift, encourage productivity, and discourage behaviors that may be detrimental to the positive atmosphere of the work environment or hinder patient care. Monitor compliance to job expectations, hospital protocols, and “to do” lists. Provide education to team members to help them achieve workplace productivity, and when needed bring problems to the attention of the Practice Manager and Medical Director.
  • Provide feedback on candidates interviewing for open positions.
  • Make recommendations to the Practice Manager and Medical Director concerning personnel matters.
  • Direct and support on-the-job training for new hires.
  • Discuss disciplinary actions needed with the Practice Manager and Medical Director and assist as appropriate.
  • Listen and relay, or resolve, informal employee complaints; provide a general explanation of the nature and basis for hospital personnel policies and procedures. Facilitate effective communication between team members.
  • Plan, schedule, and conduct Assistant / Technician meetings that are relevant, educational, and productive in conjunction with the Practice Manager and Medical Director.
  • Handle Quarterly Development Meetings for assigned team members and relay feedback and provide reports to the Practice Manager and Medical Director.
  • Intervene in situations involving personnel issues and assist with conflict resolution as appropriate.
  • Facilitate utilization of and recognize skills, experience, and knowledge of other team members, regardless of job title or position. Invite those more or differently knowledgeable/experienced than yourself on a topic to share their gifts with the team.
  • Encourage participation in CE and morale activities, such as Diamond Deeds and fun activities.

Client Satisfaction

  • Function as a “go to” person for the CSRs concerning medical questions, client complaints pertaining to the Shift Lead’s areas of responsibility, and troubleshooting various situations. Make independent decisions to answer questions and resolve situations in accordance with hospital policy, and know when to pass the situation to the Practice Manager or Medical Director.
  • Coach veterinary assistants and technicians through handling clients in challenging or difficult situations on their own, such as an upset client, and help determine when the situation needs to be handled by another party.
  • Pay range of $25-35/hour depending on education and experience. Full benefits package offered.
