Notre Dame de Sion is Hiring a High School Debate Coach Near Kansas, MO

POSITION TITLE: High School Forensics and Debate Coach
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Stipend Position - $10,000
REPORTS TO: High School Principal
Notre Dame de Sion High School is seeking a Head Forensics/Debate Coach to be responsible for all aspects of administration, operations, and coaching of the competitive speech and debate team. This coaching position includes after school practices and weekend tournaments.
This role is instrumental in our school goal to develop students who are well-rounded, faith-filled citizens and servant leaders. This is accomplished in an atmosphere of love, respect, hopefulness, openness, and by building connections through relationships.

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
  • Knowledge and understanding of and commitment to the Sion mission.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in History, Social Sciences, English, Education or related subject matter.
  • 2-5 Years strong background and experience in teaching speech/public speaking and various types of debate.
  • Experience coaching in the areas of speech and debate at a competitive level is also preferred.
  • Deep understanding of the specific needs of adolescent girl development, including social emotional needs.
  • Demonstrated classroom management and facilitative skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to set goals and accept professional feedback.
  • Must demonstrate competency with school related technology.
  • Maintain professional credentials as required by Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) or other accrediting agencies.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Designs and conducts recruitment/outreach programs to attract new speech and debate team members.
  • Sponsors an active chapter of the National Forensic League.
  • Selects, organizes, and publishes a schedule of competition. This involves responding to or soliciting invitations to tournaments, designation of a competition calendar, and completion of appropriate documentation.
  • Provides individual and group instruction in preparation for tournament competition.
  • Establishes performance requirements, enforces academic requirements, and verifies each student’s eligibility to participate in forensic/debate activities.
  • Organizes and implements debate trips in accordance with School policy and regulations as well as student interest and ability.
  • Arranges transportation, lodging, and meals for tournaments.
  • Complies with federal and state laws, State Department of Education rules, MSHSAA rules, and Board of Education policies.
  • Maintains the integrity and reputation of the school in the forensic community by teaching and modeling integrity, commitment, and diligence.
  • Meets with the principal for academics to review goals for the speech and debate team.
  • Submits to principal for academics, upon request, a year-end report including the following:
    • List of participants
    • Awards and honors received
    • Summary of activities
    • Recommendations for improvements.
  • Ensures the safety of students by adhering to both team and general school rules and regulations while onsite and while traveling.
  • Controls the storage and use of school-owned equipment and materials. Maintains an accurate inventory of school-owned equipment and materials.
  • Submits budget needs annually to the principal for academics in accordance with established timelines and guidelines.
  • Orders all supplies and materials necessary for debate-related activities in accordance with established district procedures and budget allocations.
  • Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work in a classroom environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • Occasionally bend, stoop, and squat.
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled environment.
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
