Northwood University is Hiring an Assistant Controller Near Midland, MI

Roles: Assistant Controller assist with University-wide administration of financial accounting, operations, external and internal reporting, budgeting, audit, investments, compliance, and insurance/risk management. Reporting to the Controller.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Controller and office staff to process financial information including general ledger accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, investments, payroll, grants, plant/capital accounting, and donations.
  • Assist with developing financial statements and managerial reports
  • Assist with annual financial statement and retirement plan audits
  • Assist with preparing information included in the annual budget and complete budget for leadership
  • Manage the University’s treasury operations including cash flow forecasting and frequent transfer of funds via on-line banking system
  • Prepare journal entries and assist with month-end closing process
  • Assist in administering the University’s risk and insurance program
  • Prepares monthly general ledger reconciliations, including bank reconciliations
  • Represents the Finance team on the Private Donor Scholarship and International Study Abroad Committees
  • Assists Financial Aid staff in reconciling financial aid accounts and preparing FISAP report
  • Maintains endowed scholarships records and calculates amounts available to award
  • Prepares audit documentations and works with the external auditors
  • Prepares external reports and survey
  • Prepares journal entries and processes month-end closing
  • Reviews bank transactions daily for unusual transactions and records journal entries for interest income and fees
  • Works with bank staff and card processing vendors to resolve issues and errors
  • Records investment activity including realized and unrealized gains and losses
  • Responsible for various filings: state sales tax and escheats
  • Advise and support other departments with financial advice and guidance
  • Maintains the chart of accounts
  • Reviews and prepares entries for donations
  • Prepares and maintain restricted gift records (including related expenditures)

  • Work cross functionally with other department representatives along with lead staff
  • Have strong organizational, analytical, interpersonal, problem-solving, and customer service skills
  • Have the ability to clearly communicate, both in written and verbal correspondence, complex financial information
  • Have integrity, the highest ethical standards, and the ability to manage confidential information appropriately
  • Be able to prioritize workload and meet stated deadlines

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, Finance, or related field of study and at least 5 years of work experience in accounting, financial analysis, auditing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • CPA license preferred
  • Employment in a not-for-profit organization preferred
