  • Owner Track - We are seeking a full-time, Survey Department Manager who is ready to be on the track to company ownership and play a significant role in growing our Survey Team in Chico CA. NorthStar’s Survey team is comprised of talented professionals working to better our communities through inspired design.

Your Job Responsibilities:

The Survey Department Manager is also the Department Senior Managing Surveyor and provides both leadership and professional expertise to the Survey Team comprised of eight employees. This position reports to the President of the company and is a member of the Leadership Team. Responsible for Organizational Health of the Department –furthering NorthStar’s core values of teamcentric, learning and ownership. 

DEPARTMENT MANAGER

  • Set goals and monitor continuing education training, acquisition of professional certifications and licenses, and experience.
  • Supervisory approval of time for department personnel.
  • Complete employee reviews as scheduled by Business Operations.
  • Coordinate department personnel workload and set priorities.
  • Develop and manage the department budget for equipment, training, conferences and resources.
  • Create department business and financial plans.
  • Engage in direct business development and marketing; coordinate marketing efforts.
  • Keep abreast of services available in all departments, and collaborate on multidisciplinary business development strategies

SENIOR SURVEYOR/SENIOR MANAGING SURVEYOR

  • Provide technical oversight and coordination of projects with clients, consultants, contractors, and staff.
  • Oversee the preparation of calculations, plans, maps, details and specifications.
  • Direct project teams for completion of tasks consistent with project management plans on larger projects and may be responsible for leading small projects.
  • Direct project team consistent with land surveying standards, quality control, and production.
  • Develop project proposals, estimates, contracts and facilitate change orders.
  • Stamp and sign prepared documents as the Surveyor of Record.
  • Work with clients to develop project scope, budgets, requirements, and timelines.
  • Perform job-site visits, meet with clients, contractors, agencies, and others.
  • Maintain professional and community involvement.
  • Project Management with final level for project accountability and responsibility

What you must have to apply:

  • Licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in the State of California
  • Senior Surveyor - Ten (10) or more years full-time experience in land surveying with at least three (3) years an Associate Surveyor
  • Senior Managing Surveyor - Fifteen (15) or more years full-time experience in land surveying with at least five (5) years as a Senior Surveyor.
  • At least 3 years direct experience supervising others.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with related major course work may be substituted for four years of experience.
  • Experience in all phases of land surveying, including substantial and varied experience in project management and planning.
  • Demonstrated record of successful project completion, including budget control and client satisfaction, is required, as is the ability to work within a team environment.
  • Experience in marketing, client development, project management, and managing budgets.
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and organization skills
  • Possession of valid California Driver’s License and clear DMV Report

What we prefer you have:

  • Experience in budget development and oversight.
  • Demonstrated leadership and vision in managing groups and/or initiatives.
  • Proficient in personnel management, team leadership, employee development.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, word processing and spread sheet software.
  • Ability to use AutoCAD Civil 3D, and civil/structural, surveying software as appropriate.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide coaching and mentorship.

Job Specific Physical Demands:

Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and/or near moving mechanical parts or in precarious positions. The employee is occasionally exposed to construction sites, hazardous plants, insects, reptiles, and animals.

Compensation and Benefits: 

NorthStar offers competitive pay and a full range of employee benefits:

  • Salary – $100,000 to $144,400 based on relevant experience
