North Carolina Dept of Transportation is Hiring an Engineering Technician III - McLeansville Construction Near Guilford, NC

Description of Work

Salary Grade: NC11 / Salary Range: $42,464 – $74,313

This posting is intended to fill a total of two positions: 60020063 and 60020013. You only need to apply once to be considered for both positions.

This position is located in Guilford County in the McLeansville Resident Engineer’s Office. This is an Engineering Technician III position that will serve as a lead project inspector and will support higher level engineers in the administration of medium to large highway construction projects. Monitors daily progress of projects and resolves constructability issues to maintain project schedules. Direct and schedule the work of technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. Manges all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from high level engineers. May supervise and train multiple technicians, including Department employees and contract inspectors. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing related to this position. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
Additional Expectations:
Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the general public. Work involves independent decision making and use of judgement. Must be able to document and take some corrective actions and apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Selected applicant will be expected to complete daily diaries, survey notes and other record keeping items manually and electronically. Must be able to perform construction related mathematical calculations. Selected applicant will be required to acquire various certifications, including QMS Asphalt, Concrete Testing, Borrow Pit Sampling and MSHA Certifications. Employee must be able to lift 40 to 50 pounds, work in high traffic areas, work at heights over water or traffic, work in extreme temperatures, be able to traverse uneven terrain, and work during nights and weekends if necessary. Safety toe shoes are required for this position. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment screening.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
