Job Description

Job Summary
The Executive Director will work with the Board of Directors and Community leaders to shape the strategic direction of our
organization, drive impactful programs, and help raise crucial funds to support our mission.
The Executive Director is the organization’s chief executive and leader, responsible for overseeing the strategic and
operational efficiencies of our programs and staff and safeguarding the mission as the organization grows its presence
and impact. Specifically, an animal shelter and two veterinary clinics. This knowledgeable leader will have a hands-on,
engaging, and humane leadership style, and will oversee an annual operating budget of approximately $3M, and an
experienced team of senior leaders who direct program operations and oversee veterinary services, community
engagement, fundraising, communications, finance, and human resources. Sharing accountability for the organization's
well-being and sustainability, the Executive Director and senior leadership team lead, motivate, and develop a full staff of
about forty (42) with a focus on inclusivity, continuous improvement, and organizational excellence.
Duties and responsibilities

Work closely with the Board of Directors and committees to create the organization’s strategic and long-range
plan and assess and address issues affecting the organization by understanding current trends in the industry
and local community; provide direction on public policy and advocacy efforts.

Oversee daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction for program strategies and efficiencies
that grow mission impact, while cultivating a culture of compassion, transparency, and inclusion.

Increase awareness by being the face of the organization, overseeing public relations and branding, and
participate in external events to increase visibility, credibility, and market brand.

Develop and cultivate strategic partnerships and establish networks in the animal welfare community to support
program opportunities and collaborations that drive program results.

Assure continued financial stability, consistent with program goals, by broadening the organization’s base of
individual supporters and contributors, as well as long-term funding planning, and obtaining support from
foundations and corporations.

Ensure sound fiscal management of the organization’s operational finances and reserves maintain financial
policies and procedures, and risk management guidelines.

Develop and lead the organization’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives through compassionate action and
provide comprehensive training, career growth opportunities and enhanced compensation policies to support and
retain a diverse workforce.

Lead the organization in best animal welfare practices and advocate and educate for animal welfare humane
practices to ensure that the organization continues to be recognized locally, regionally, and nationally as a leading
charitable organization.

Maintain and develop an effective governance structure that reflects the diversity of its stakeholders (volunteers,
donors, partnering organizations etc.), operates transparently and provides formal communication channels that
support a reputable presence both internally and externally.

Collaborate with the Board of Directors to recruit and develop an engaged, effective, and energized Board that is
clear on its duties, responsibilities, and functions and participate as ex-officio member of the Board and
committees.

Job Description

Supervisory Responsibility

This position manages the employees listed above and is responsible for the performance management, as well as the
workforce development of the entire staff.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment, veterinary facility, and kennels This role routinely uses standard
office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Routinely, there will be a
need for the incumbent to work/walk Norfolk SPCA and all areas therein.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully
perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger,
handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl;
talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities
required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to
adjust focus.
Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long
hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to
perform other essential functions of the position.
Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

1. Bachelor’s degree and five years’ related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and
experience. Minimum of three to five years of managerial experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.

1. Bachelor’s degree and five years’ managerial work experience, in a field relative to the responsibilities of this role.
2. Experience and personal values that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
3. Prior experience working in collaboration with a Board of Directors.
4. Prior experience developing key major donor relationships.
