NextFlex, America's Flexible Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing Innovation Institute, is a public-private partnership and non-profit with the mission of advancing the capabilities of U.S. manufacturing in the field of Flexible Hybrid Electronics (FHE). NextFlex was designed to facilitate the development of enabling manufacturing technologies and knowledge sharing with institute members and the U.S. Government. Our work enables the next generation electronics and packaging for government and commercial applications for medical, wearable, asset monitoring, structural health monitoring, soft robotics, integrated array antennas, automotive, agricultural technology applications, among other applications.
Complementing NextFlex's focus on developing and commercializing emerging technologies, NextFlex's Education and Workforce Development department is creating the next-generation STEM workforce for the electronics industry. In support of our education and workforce development goals, NextFlex develops and operates a portfolio of learning programs designed to be adopted by various stakeholders (employers, higher education, non-profit, and K-12 entities) across the country with the goal of attracting and training the future advanced manufacturing workforce and upskilling and retraining the existing workforce.

POSITION SUMMARY
NextFlex is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager / Technical Lead to assist in the leadership and mentorship of members of its embedded system team. This role will include a combination of technical, project and personnel leadership along with the opportunity to work hands on with new electronic formfactors and manufacturing processes made possible by Flexible Hybrid Electronics. The role requires creative ability to leverage opportunities offered by the combination of novel materials, processes, and architectures of FHE across a diverse range of domains including aerospace, medical, defense and industrial monitoring.
This is a perfect opportunity for an engineer who is interested in owning and leading advanced projects while helping to train the next generation of engineering talent. You will help lead the team through all phases of system and device design (concept development, component selection, sourcing, schematic design, layout, device fabrication, and troubleshooting) while working collaboratively with management, government and commercial partners, process and manufacturing engineers, software developers and material scientists. A strong interest in cross disciplinary work and a focus on continuous learning is a must.

  • High level coordination and technical planning of complex projects across diverse teams
  • Helping to lead and mentor junior engineers
  • Tackle challenges of solving difficult multidisciplinary problems
  • Work closely with Program Managers, Directors, and Business Development to meet milestones and deadlines
  • Advise NextFlex teams on emerging technology trends and develop new initiatives
  • Lead the design, develop, and test electrical devices for integrated electronics systems built with advanced additive manufacturing techniques
  • Communicate and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists
  • Assist in generation of formal documentation for projects
  • Participate in design reviews and customer meetings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities
  • Interest in mentoring junior personnel
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 10 years industry experience working with electronics design
  • Strong EE fundamentals and track record of innovative solutions
  • Experience designing PCBs for size, weight, and power constrained applications
  • Experience with all phases of electronics design: part selection, schematic creation, constraint setting, library management, board layout, and manufacturing document creation
  • Successful track record of working with cross disciplinary teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous team and/or project leadership experience
  • MSc or PhD degree in Engineering
  • Familiarity with Mentor Graphics, Cadence, or Altium tools and PCB design
  • Experience with PCB simulation tools
  • Experience with printed electronics
  • Experience designing for low-power systems with multiple mixed signal ICs, power management devices, wired/wireless charging, and sensors
  • Experience designing Flex devices or non-planar electronics
  • Experience with firmware development in C or C for embedded systems
  • Experience with layout for low noise applications/high-noise environments
  • Experience across multiple engineering domains e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Additive Manufacturing, Material Science
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Ability to lead projects across multidisciplinary teams
Ability to mentor Junior Engineers

  • Prolonged hours sitting at a desk working on a computer
  • Prolonged hours working in a test lab using electronics test equipment, soldering tools and visual inspection tools
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Travel for work up to 10% domestically for meetings/conferences, as needed.
