JOB DESCRIPTION:
1. Help students resolve personal, emotional and social problems.
2. Enhance students’ adjustment to school and capacity to benefit from educational
opportunities.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintain excellent attendance for contractual work schedule, including:
a) appearing to work on time;
b) providing advance notice of absence to permit adequate coverage;
c) limiting absences to earned Personal and Sick days.
2. Assist social, emotional and behavioral adjustment of students, including:
a) assessing a student’s personal and family history, and socio-economic and cultural
differences;
b) evaluating factors within the home, community and school as related to a student’s
current social and academic adjustment;
c) preparing progress reports and report cards;
d) participating in IEP meetings;
e) planning and assisting in implementation of behavior modification programs;
f) developing student counseling goals and treatment plan;
g) observing students to gain data for counseling goals and treatment plans;
h) conducting Group Counseling Sessions/Team Building Sessions;
i) conducting individual and small group Counseling Sessions;
j) compiling and maintaining a log of all students seen, date and topics covered;
k) completing SEMI reports on a monthly basis.
3. Improve school environment to benefit student welfare, including:
a) consulting with administration and staff regarding social adjustment factors of
students in schools, at home and in the community;
b) interpreting the implications of significant social findings;
c) participating in educational planning for all students;
d) being well versed in the social decision-making, problem solving curriculum, behavior
modification system, social thinking curriculum and social-emotional programs at the
school.
4. Interact with parents to promote student progress and welfare, including:
a) maintaining an ongoing relationship with families for the purpose of sharing information
regarding educational planning and programming for the student;
b) assisting the family in utilizing appropriate community resources;
c) referring parents and students to agencies when appropriate;
d) providing counseling to family members and/or students to facilitate social
adjustment;
e) holding Monthly Parent Counseling Meeting Nights;
f) assisting parents with obtaining information on after-school, district and summer
programs;
g) developing and organizing quarterly mental health newsletter.
5. Work with outside organizations to facilitate student social programs, including:
a) maintaining contact with outside agencies/counselors to facilitate a comprehensive
approach to student welfare;
b) initiating, facilitating and maintaining liaison with community agencies and other
resources to meet special needs.
6. Conduct additional responsibilities for student management, including:
a) organizing and overseeing school store and POS inventory;
b) assisting with lunchtime, arrival and departure supervision of students.
7. Undertake professional self-improvement enhancing school programs, including:
a) maintaining professional competence through in-service education and participation in
professional development activities;
b) participating in professional development programs;
c) keeping current on the latest educational and behavioral strategies.
8. Be punctual and prepared for all meetings.
9. Maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor.
10. Collaborate with other professional staff members to elicit the very best from students.
11. Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor of Counseling.
