    ASSISTANT GENERAL COUNSEL
    Office of General Counsel

    The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Assistant General Counsel within the Office of General Counsel.

    DEFINITION: To provide professional legal counsel and representation for the Board of Education, Superintendent, and staff of the Newark Board of Education (NBOE).

    NOTE: The examples of work shown below are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
    1. Juris Doctorate degree.
    2. Admission to practice law in the State of New Jersey.
    3. Ten (10) to fifteen (15) years of experience in the practice of law, with experience in general civil litigation in state and federal courts and administrative agencies
    • Experience in general representation of New Jersey Public School Districts (preferred).
    • Experience in matters arising under the New Jersey Tort Claims Act (preferred).
    • Experience in matters arising under state and federal civil rights laws, special education laws, New Jersey Employer-Employee Relations Act, and New Jersey Civil Rights Act (preferred).
    • Experience in matters arising under the New Jersey Public School Contracts Law (preferred).
    4. Successful experience in supervising, evaluating, and managing the work and functions of other attorneys and support staff.

    BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. Representation of NBOE in litigation and other legal matters.
    2. Management and supervision of litigation handled by in-house attorneys and outside counsel.
    3. Management of general liability claims and interaction with third-party claims administrator.
    4. Management of department budget accounts for legal services, judgments, settlements, and operating expenses.
    5. Rendition of oral and written legal advice to the Board of Education and District administrators.
    6. Representation of NBOE and/or District administration at meetings and participation in projects as directed.
    7. Perform other duties as assigned.

    REPORTS TO: General Counsel

    SALARY, EMPLOYEMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION
    1. Salary: Commensurate with experience
    2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months
    3. Union Affiliation: Unaffiliated
