GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under direction of supervisory staff in the Newborn Screening (NBS) Labroatory, the Senior Laboratory Technician position will

function as the lead technician in the NBS Specimen Receiving Unit, ensuring that all packages containing specimens are

tracked, opened correctly and all specimens accounted for, that all specimens are correctly accessioned into the laboratory

information management system (LIMS), that correct tests are ordered, and that samples are correctly distributed to the

laboratory testing units. This position will assist with training new staff in the Receiving Unit procedures.

The successful candidate will utilize standard operating procedures to perform daily tasks. These tasks include but are not

limited to tracking packages and opening packages containg specimens, calling submitters to request additional information or

inform them of unsatisfactory specimens and request repeat specimens be submitted, punching specimens on the Panthera

punchers and performing puncher maintenance after use, running reports to ensure all tests have been ordered, linking

specimens from the same baby in the LIMS, manually ordering tests, preparing lab reports and letters for mailing, and filing

specimens and unit paperwork.

The person filling this position will utilize software including Microsoft Office products and the LIMS, as well as Departmental

forms for assisting with organizing specimens and paperwork for off-site storage.

This position will be crosstrained in in the Genetic Screening Processor Unit to perform specimen testing to ensure continuity of

laboratory operations. The successful candidate will establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with the other NBS

units, including all testing units, Data Entry, and Clerical, and be able to provide assistance to other units to ensure completion of

essentail procedures.

The NBS Program, which screens all of New Jersey's newborns for 61 biochemical and genetics disorders, operates Monday-

Saturday, due to the time sensitive nature of the medical intervention required to avoid potentially catastrophic health

consequences. Therefore, this position will require working on Saturdays and holidays, on a rotating schedule.

REQUIREMENTS (EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / LICENSES)

EDUCATION: Successful completion of 60 semester hour credits from an accredited college or university, 24 hours of which

shall have been in biological, chemical and/or physical sciences.

NOTE: Successful completion of a certificate program in Clinical Laboratory Technology may be substituted for the above

education.

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience as a technician in a public health, hospital, clinic, or research laboratory performing

various types of tests.
