Schedule: 07:00p - 07:00a / Rotating days off (3rd shift)

This shift receives a $7.00 shift differential.

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Corrections, Division of Medical & Forensics has a full-time vacancy for a Registered Nurse.

REGISTERED NURSE I:

SCOPE OF WORK: Provides general nursing care and treatment in an adult ambulatory setting, inpatient infirmary unit, and/or in an inpatient psychiatric forensic unit, in a facility managed by the NH Department of Corrections under the direction of the nurse coordinator or designee working in close and immediate contact with prisoners and/or residents civilly committed on a daily basis while maintaining safety and security.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Utilizes the nursing process to perform duties of staff nurse in terms of administration of medication and medical treatment within an assigned unit; provides and supports medical care as directed by medical staff pursuant to policies, objectives, and guidelines of the department.
  • Exercises considerable judgment in monitoring, assessing, and implementing medical and nursing interventions of prisoners/residents within the assigned unit to ensure quality, nursing service.
  • Advises prisoners/residents to components of their Plan-of-Care and courses of action which might be taken to achieve the goals agreed upon at appointments for the implementation of the prisoner/residents overall treatment plan.
  • Gathers pertinent data relative to physical/psychological changes in the prisoners/residents and relays information to Nurse Coordinator or designee, as well as other members of the correctional team as it relates to facility and individual safety to determine course of intervention and planning.
  • Reports through effective communication routine and unusual facts and situations to the Nursing Coordinator/designee and gives inter-shift report to on-coming shift, of events/occurrences on their shift to provide continuity of care and safety throughout the department.
  • Makes contact with physicians, specialists, and allied health professionals using professional assessment/judgment skills in relating facts as presented during the consultation to convey accurate descriptive information lending itself to informed medical decision making.
  • Administers prescribed medications and makes appropriate nursing documentation of effects of medications given to guard against poly-pharmacy issues, and mismanaged medication regimes and reports these to Nurse Coordinator or designee.
  • Admits, transfers, and discharges prisoners/residents as directed by the attending provider to provide for timely medical care or least restrictive housing options.
  • Provides nursing clinical supervision or technical assistance for agency nurses or non-health staff in patient/inmate management.
  • Participates in the Health Quality Improvement Program and orienting new staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a recognized nursing program with either affiliate or postgraduate courses and clinical experience in medical, surgical, obstetrics, pediatrics and psychiatric nursing.

Experience: One years' experience as a registered nurse in a setting equivalent to the position assigned. License or Certification. Current license as a Registered Nurse in New Hampshire. Special Requirements. Successful completion of the Corrections Academy and continuing Certification as correctional line personnel as established by the certifying authority.

REGISTERED NURSE II:

SCOPE OF WORK: Provides general and specialized nursing care, supervision, and treatment in an adult ambulatory setting, inpatient infirmary unit, and/or in an inpatient psychiatric forensic unit, in a facility managed by the NH Department of Corrections under the direction of the nurse coordinator or designee working in close and immediate contact with prisoners and/or residents civilly committed on a daily basis while maintaining safety and security.

  • Admits, transfers, and discharges prisoners/residents as directed by the attending provider to provide for timely medical care or least restrictive housing options.
  • Acts in the capacity of a lead nurse as assigned by the Nurse Coordinator or designee while providing nursing clinical supervision, orientation, continue education and/or technical assistance for RN I, RN II, agency nurses or non-health staff in prisoner/resident management.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities in accordance with Department policy including but not limited to reporting standards as established by Public Health.

Education: Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university with major study in nursing, human services, psychology, or a related field.

Experience: One year of experience as a registered nurse in a setting similar or equivalent to the position assigned.

OR

Education: Graduation from a recognized nursing program and possession of an Associate’s degree in nursing, human services, psychology, or a related field.

Experience: Two years of experience as a registered nurse in a setting similar or equivalent to the position assigned.

AND

License/Certification:

1. Current license as a Registered Nurse in New Hampshire.

2. Current certification in CPR.

3. At the discretion of the hiring agency, candidates must be certified by the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying entity in a specialty that is consistent with the job accountabilities and appropriate to the institution or agency in which the vacancy exists.
