Nevada Copper is Hiring a Health and Safety Manager Near Yerington, NV

Nevada Copper (TSX:NCU) is a copper producer and owner of the Pumpkin Hollow copper project. Located in Nevada, USA, Pumpkin Hollow has substantial reserves and resources including copper, gold, and silver. Its two fully permitted projects include the high-grade underground mine and processing facility, which is now in the production stage, and a large-scale open pit project, which is advancing towards feasibility status.

Purpose of the Position:

The Health and Safety Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, collaborating and overseeing health and safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with MSHA regulations and to promote a culture of safety throughout the organization. This role will involve conducting safety audits, providing training to employees, investigating incidents, and collaborating with various stakeholders to continuously improve safety performance.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Responsible for all aspects of safety, health, and training including supervision, quality control, and technical support.
  • Responsible for the direct supervision of occupational health and safety to include safety personnel, workers compensation, industrial hygiene, and emergency response training.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and management of Emergency Response Training for Surface, Underground, Confined Space Entry and Rescue Training, High and Low Angle Ropes Rescue, Trench Rescue, FF1 and FF2 training, etc.
  • Oversee and direct all required H&S training for safety personnel, managers, employees, and contractors, including annual MSHA refresher and new hire training, while maintaining company and regulatory records and files.
  • Directly responsible for site-wide security and training, including MSHA and new hire orientation, enhancement of programs, standards, site directives and operational procedures.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and assessments to ensure that facility standards and operational areas are in compliance with governmental regulations and corporate policy.
  • Direct, influence and contribute to the review and development of remedial measures that control or eliminate safety and health hazards.
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor safety trends and studies to discover and determine hazards/risks and controls that may affect workers.
  • Communicate effectively with operations and all levels of management to support and participate in the development of effective safety, occupational health, training, and security programs at the site.
  • Responsible for the Development and training on the emergency preparedness plans and provide specific guidance in implementation of the plan.
  • Develop annual and long-range safety, health, training and security goals, objectives, action plans, and the supporting budget.
  • Conduct talent reviews of site safety staff and oversee the implementation of professional training and career development programs.
  • Leads, contributes, and manages in the reduction in safety violations by conducting inspections and informing management when exceptions to regulations are found.
  • Responsibility will include the development & implementation of world class Health and Safety policies, procedures, hazard assessment and corrective action to minimize risk, loss, and accidents while maintaining compliance with all company guidelines as well as relevant Health & Safety regulations.
  • Prevent recurrence of specific types of personal injury accidents by coordinating and assisting in thorough accident investigations and providing management with specific recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Support the site safety culture through leadership and regularly engaging with and holding the workforce accountable for safe work practices.
  • Conduct, lead and/or supervise and oversee the incident investigation process and incident analysis when applicable to ensure all incidents are properly investigated to determine root cause; assist with development of effective corrective actions to prevent recurrences of incidents.
  • Facilitate ongoing health and safety meetings and risk reviews as required.
  • Coordinate with MSHA and State Inspectors to ensure timely correction of cited violations or notice of findings.
  • Responsible to ensure employees are in compliance with audiograms, fit testing, and noise sampling as required.

Knowledge/ Education:

The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Safety, Occupational Health, or a related field is required or equivalent of eight (8) to ten (10) years’ experience in the field.
  • Minimum of eight (8) to ten (10) years of mining industry experience in surface, with underground, and/or mine process, required.
  • Strong health and safety behaviors including familiarity with and adherence to NFPA and MSHA standards related to underground and surface metal/non-metal standards required.
  • Technical Rescue Training required.
  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) designation preferred.
  • Mine rescue experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a high level of knowledge in industrial hygiene management is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in behavior-based safety is essential.

  • Lift and potentially carry up to 50-70 lbs.
  • Operate a vehicle with a valid driver’s license
  • Climb stairwells and be capable of working on elevated platforms
  • Walk on uneven ground
  • Periodically work in adverse weather conditions
  • Sit for extended periods of time
  • Stay alert during periods of inactivity
  • The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
  • The ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hand, and wrists.

Work Schedule and Personal Protective Equipment:

The incumbent is expected to work a 40 hour/week schedule with either a schedule of 4-10hrs or as determined by the supervisor. Position may require weekend or evening work depending on organizational and operational requirements for the business. Ability to work extended hours as operational needs require to support projects, investigation or other associated tasks. Personal Protective Equipment required for the fieldwork portion of this position includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots. All equipment must be MSHA approved as applicable.
