Neighborhood Service Organization is Hiring a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Near Westland, MI

Position Summary: Assists with direct client services in an assigned unit. Greets, instructs and directs patients and visitors. Performs moderately complex clerical and clinical work.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Record patient’s medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in the electronic health record
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs.
  • Obtain authorization for drug refills and provides prescription information to pharmacies.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and disposes of contaminated supplies.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician or mid-level provider.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepares them for the physician.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and/or provider’s instructions to patients.
  • Help provider examines and treats patients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures.
  • Receive patients and check’s patient’s insurance eligibility.
  • Prepare exam rooms and instruments for examination and testing.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing
  • Perform chemical analysis of blood and other body fluids to determine chemical components.
  • Mount stains and examines smears.
  • Perform vital signs and routine tests and procedures including but not limited to hemoglobin, urinalysis, pregnancy test, pulmonary function test, glucose, lead, strep screen, EKG, NST, etc.
  • Administer vision and hearing tests and Pediatric Developmental screening tests.
  • Perform laboratory duties as assigned.
  • Assist in explaining, interpreting documents and patient instruction.
  • Administration of injections
  • Attend required meetings, and in-services, participate in committees as requested.
  • Participate in CLIA and OSHA compliance and monitoring as required.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPPA regulations.
  • Practice universal precautions.
  • Stock supplies sterilize instruments and maintain a sterile field
  • Provide telephone coverage for after-hours access.
  • Collaborate with members of the health care team and other health professionals as it relates to essential job duties


Performance requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records. Skill in establishing and maintaining working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.

Abilities:

Knowledge of moderately complex clinical procedures. Communicates effectively, orally and in writing. Works and communicates effectively and tactfully with individuals and groups of differing cultural, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Interacts tactfully with the public and departmental personnel. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation to type patient information. Skill in operating a computer and copy machine. Skills in greeting patients and answering the telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner. Ability to speak clearly and concisely. Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetic or numeric systems. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with patients, employees, and the public. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information. Ability to perform moderately complex clinical procedures. Ability to speak Spanish preferred.

Education:

High school graduate or GED. Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program from an accredited community college or accredited technical training program.

Experience:

1. Prefer one- two years of work experience, preferably in a medical setting.

2. Experience in moderately complex clinical procedures preferred.

3. Knowledge of medical terminology.

4. Word processing and computer experience. Experience in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) software preferred.


Special requirements, qualifications, licenses or certifications:

Certified Medical Assistant thru an accredited association.

Supervision exercised: None.

Typical physical demands: Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching, requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, type at 35 wpm, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports. Work may require sitting for long periods; also stooping, bending and stretching for files and supplies. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts. It is necessary to view and type on computer screens for long periods and to work in an environment that can be stressful. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds.

Typical working conditions/environment: Involves frequent contact with patients. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medical preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment Evening or weekend work. Work environment may be stressful at times.
