Job Summary

Child Development Department staff support the Neighborhood House mission framework and Strategic Plan by contributing to the school readiness of low-income children and supporting their parents, care givers and community. The Site Aide is an on-call intermittent team member who provides day to day support to keep site operations running smoothly as needed. The Site Aide will report to the Family and Health Services Manager (or Center Based Manager, depending on worksite) and work under the direction of Center Based staff in support of classroom and center needs.

Responsibilities

Promote and Support School Readiness and Family Engagement

  • Support family engagement activities by helping with setup, welcoming families, serving food, helping families get signed into childcare rooms, and other tasks related to Parent Center Meetings, parent trainings, and other events.
  • Assist with food service for classrooms on days when Food Service Workers are out or need more support.
  • Provide breaks to teachers as assigned by site managers in both preschool and toddler classrooms.
  • Assist in creating a warm and safe learning environment for children when helping in classrooms.
  • Practice active supervision of children per Child Development policies and procedures.
  • Ensure confidentiality is observed; examples may include not sharing personally identifiable information such as names or photos of children or parents enrolled in our programs with others, and not discussing confidential information such as health conditions of children or their family members with anyone outside the program.
  • Provide extra support for children that need it with direction from the Lead and Assistant Teachers.
  • Help with site tasks such as cleaning and sanitizing, organization, laundry, unpacking deliveries, and more as needed to keep classrooms and the site running smoothly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED or be currently enrolled in high school or an equivalent education program.
  • 6 months experience working or volunteering in a school setting or in another role providing administrative and other day to day supports.
  • Proficiency in oral and written English language.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, receive and provide feedback, and understand policies, procedures, and regulations related to the job.
  • Willingness to comply with established agency policies which may include: productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer service-orientation, embracing a team player orientation, and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Willingness to comply with Head Start Standards of Conduct by promoting the unique identity of each child and family; conforming with program confidentiality; following child supervision and guidance policies; and refraining from soliciting or accepting personal gratuities, favors, or anything of significant monetary value from contractors or potential contractors.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to travel independently to Child Development service sites.
  • Must be available to work during typical classroom hours, which are Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 3:30 PM with occasional later shifts for other events.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bilingual ability.
  • Current or former Head Start and Early Head Start parents receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit on the floor for long periods of time and to get up and down out of a sitting position regularly throughout the day.
  • Ability to stand, walk and get down to the child level (3-5 year old) unassisted repeatedly throughout the day.
  • Ability to move quickly including running for short periods if needed to ensure child safety and/or respond to an emergency.
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs unassisted while holding children’s hands.
  • Ability to lift, hold, and carry a child up to 50 pounds as needed throughout the day.
  • The usual methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing.

Required Credentials

  • Must pass Neighborhood House background check requirements.
  • Position requires Washington State bi-annual criminal background re-check.
  • Current Health Exam, Tuberculosis Screening, and record of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccination or immunity (must be obtained prior to employment).
  • Department of Early Learning portable background check.
  • Obtain a Washington Food Worker Card

Post-Hire on-the-job Training Requirements

  • Active Child Supervision, Communicable Disease Prevention, and Medication Management with site managers and nurse (prior to being in ratio for breaks).
  • Child Abuse and Neglect training (within 2 weeks of hire).
  • Current First Aid Certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Current CPR Certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Sexual Harassment Training within 30 days of hire.
  • Current Food Handlers certificate within 30 days of employment (maintain current certificate during employment).
  • Current Blood Borne Pathogens training certificate within 30 days of employment (maintain current certificate during employment).
  • Have their professional development progress documented annually.
  •  Must complete ten hours of annual in-service training after twelve months of cumulative employment.
