Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant I (MA) is a key member of the medical care team who proactively collaborates with providers to provide high quality primary care to a panel of patients. The MA assists in managing patient flow and performs care coordination for patients in their pod, under the guidance of a registered nurse.

Per organizational need candidates must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal in English and Spanish.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Pod Primary MA Responsibilities

  1. ‘Red Carpet’ patients by greeting them in a courteous, respectful and timely manner.
  2. Lead care team huddle, using information gathered during chart preparation.
  3. Work in conjunction with others in pod to ensure patients are roomed and discharged in an efficient manner.
  4. Appropriately prepare exam room for patient visits.
  5. Admit patients and conduct an initial interview; record results into the patients’ electronic health record (EHR) in a timely manner.
  6. Initiate patient care by following approved standing orders based on the patient history and presenting symptoms.
  7. Check pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height of patients. Record results into the patients’ electronic health record.
  8. Assist providers with procedures as directed.
  9. Assist in providing health education, as appropriate and as directed.
  10. Perform blood tests, EKG's, visual acuity, urine and hearing tests; record results into the patients’ medical record (paper or electronic) in a thorough and accurate manner.
  11. Administer injections to pediatric and adult patients; record results into the patients’ medical record (paper or electronic).
  12. Update patient demographics as reported by patient in the NextGen practice management system.
  13. Data enter new patients to immunization registry daily, and in a timely manner.
  14. Collect member specimens for testing.

Pod Care and Case Coordination Responsibilities

  1. In preparation for scheduled patients, anticipate and procure relevant documents and data for the provider (i.e., consultation reports from specialists.)
  2. Review providers’ schedule throughout the day and work proactively to keep care team on track.
  3. Assist provider with followup, as directed (i.e., outreach to patients, call labs for results, etc.)
  4. Assist in closing the loop on subspecialty referrals, in collaboration with the Referral Coordinator.
  5. Call No Show appointments to follow up and reschedule, if appropriate.
  6. Conduct robust confirmation calls for patients, by calling the same day of their appointment.
  7. Support RN in managing forms, for pod providers’ signature/attention.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Check patients out, and schedule follow up appointments, as appropriate.
  2. Close lab according to departmental protocol, when assigned.
  3. Prepare an inventory of supplies to determine items that need to be replenished.
  4. Notify appropriate persons of items that need to be ordered.
  5. Attend trainings and meetings, as requested by supervisor.
  6. Provide break coverage to other MA’s, as directed.
  7. Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned.
  8. Patient Care: Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe patient practices.
  9. Employee Safety: Safely perform all duties; follow required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others.
  10. Work extremely well under pressure, meet multiple and often competing deadlines.
  11. Demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, colleagues, clients and the community.
  12. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must have high school diploma or its equivalent and certificate of completion from an accredited Medical Assistant training program.
  2. Must be able to obtain State Medical Assistant Certification within 6 months of hire (RMA/CMA).
  3. Fluency in both English and Spanish, both written and verbal is required, per operational need.
  4. Computer literate; familiarity with Microsoft Word.
  5. Excellent customer service skills with patients, supervisors, colleagues and the community.
  6. Ability to multi-task and must be self-motivated.
  7. Must have up to date and documented Immunizations; Proof of HBV, MMR, VZV (or disease), current TB skin test status or chest x-ray.
  8. Ability to bend, lift, carry up to 25lbs. with relative ease.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Previous experience working as a Medical Assistant is strongly desired.
  2. State Certified Medical Assistant, having received certification from an accredited Medical Assisting program.
  3. Experience working in a community health setting is preferable
  4. Experience working with an EHR (i.e., EPIC), i2i tracks is preferred.
