Mount Hood Community College is Hiring an Adviser, TRIO Student Support Services Near Gresham, OR

Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

This is a Grant Funded, Limited Duration position with an expected end date of August 31, 2025.
Provides advising services to TRIO Student Support Services program participants. Assesses student needs, and provides direct support to program students in the areas of academic advising, financial aid, scholarship, tutoring, financial literacy, career goals, and program orientation. Assists students with establishing and maintaining short- and long-range plans, and collaborates with College staff and resources to remove barriers and support student success.
Essential Duties:

  • Performs student needs assessment, which may include program intakes.
  • Assists students with the development of long-range education plans, selection of appropriate courses, and interpretation of institutional requirements and assessment of progress toward established career and life goals; assesses alternatives and consequences of decisions.
  • Advises student caseload via small group and individual sessions. Establishes an academic plan, monitors their academic progress and provides appropriate intervention.
  • Collaborates with student service departments and staff, including the Learning Success Center/AVID, to implement and provide tutoring resources, time-management, study skills, and regular academic check-ins. Maintains up-to-date resources on campus to best support student success.
  • Assists students with enrollment/registration, financial aid, and academic and probation/suspension status.
  • Provides personalized assessment of participants’ barriers to successfully completing educational goals, and provides assistance in overcoming or limiting these where possible.
  • Assists students with the development of decision-making skills and awareness of educational resources
  • Provides advising expertise and serves as liaison among students, faculty, administration, staff and the community in developing and implementing a seamless approach to program services.
  • May serve as liaison for high schools and post-secondary institutions, community agencies and other groups as appropriate to the program.
  • Develops, plans and conducts activities, such as orientations, cultural enrichment and information workshops, classes, visits to 4-year colleges and universities and other activities as appropriate.
  • Ensures compliance with TRIO legislation and regulations.
  • Maintains required information in program databases, including student contacts for services log and current information/data to indicate academic progress.
Additional Duties:
  • Provides assistance to the Director of TRIO Programs for recruitment and outreach efforts
  • Serves on committees as appropriate.
  • May provide training to TRIO Student Support Service Ambassadors, work-study and hourly student employees. Provides input to Director of TRIO Program on hiring and performance evaluation.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology or related field
Experience/Training:

  • Minimum (3) years of career and/or academic advising experience in a post-secondary setting
  • Experience working in a culturally diverse setting with disadvantaged populations, including academic need, low income, first generation, and individuals with disabilities
  • Intermediate-level skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Current driver’s license, insurance and the ability to be insured by the college insurance carrier. Must have at least three (3) years of driving history.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in education, social work, psychology, or related field
  • Bilingual skills with fluency in English and Spanish, Russian, or other language that meet community needs
  • Experience in organizing and conducting workshops and/or off-site activities
  • Prior experience working in a federal education program

  • Knowledge of financial aid processes
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to manage and prioritize caseloads
  • Knowledge of financial aid policies and processes
  • Knowledge of best practices related to student academic assessment and advising
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to tailor presentations and workshops to a target audience

Working Conditions and Important Information

Working Conditions:

Work is typically performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a computer terminal. Repetitive hand/wrist motion and eye-strain for data-entry and keyboarding functions. Possible exposure to potentially dangerous situations when working off- campus, after normal hours and when driving to and from events.

Salary:
Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
