Mount Hood Community College is Hiring a Groundskeeper Near Gresham, OR

Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Shift Hours: Monday-Friday, 6:00AM-2:30PM
Basic Job Purpose/Function
Under general direction, works to contribute to the safety and beauty of the College’s properties. Performs a wide range of grounds keeping duties that directly impact College staff, students and guests. Maintains the care of the landscape, lawns, athletic fields, walkways, parking areas, roads, storm drainage and bioswale systems of the 220 acre multi-campus facility. Frequently handles a variety of landscaping chemicals and operates a variety of commercial grounds equipment and tools.
Essential Duties


  • Landscape:
    Cares for shrubs, trees, and groundcover areas. Prunes, weeds, edges, removes debris, top dresses, irrigates, plants new plants and removes the undesirable. Mixes and applies soil amendments, insecticide, herbicide and fungicide on schedule and handles chemicals and other materials in a safe manner. Excavates and develops landscape areas for installation and renovation.
  • Lawns: Mows, aerates, thatches, edges, removes debris, irrigates, and reseeds or replaces sod in damaged areas. Mixes and applies soil amendments and chemicals on schedule and handles chemicals and other materials in a safe manner. Excavates and develops lawn areas for installation and renovation.
  • Athletic areas: Prepares athletic fields, stadium, and swimming pool areas for special events: cleans litter, sweeps, pressure washes, marks fields for events, and positions soccer goal sets. Maintains athletic fields by following similar duties stated under lawn care.
  • Sidewalks, paths, steps, parking lots and roadways: Empties litter cans; removes debris, road kill, snow and ice; sweeps and power washes areas; and applies chemicals and/or materials to remove slippery conditions to ensure safety of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  • Irrigation systems and fountains: Installs, repairs and programs manual and electronic irrigation systems, sets sprinkler heads, and sends damaged controllers out for repair to ensure adequate moisture for landscape while adhering to water use restrictions. Maintains decorative water fountains.
  • Drainage systems: Monitors and clears storm drainage system obstructions and improves grades in surrounding landscape to prevent erosion into drains. Monitors and clears obstructions of the College pond spill-way and maintains the bioswales that remove silt and pollutants from surface runoff water.
  • Equipment operation and maintenance: Operates equipment, tools, and vehicles in a safe manner; fuels, cleans, and performs routine preventative maintenance and daily checks on all items used to perform tasks. Informs Fleet Maintenance Mechanic of needed repairs.
  • Pest management: Monitors outdoor areas for harmful and/or landscape damaging rodents, insects, and road kill; provides abatement of such and follows proper biohazard disposal procedures. Monitors and controls plant damaging insects and diseases.
  • Orders supplies and maintains records: Orders a wide range of supplies and materials in coordination with facilities management, and maintains supply documentation and order logs. Tracks grounds keeping processes and projects.
  • Work orders: Inspects campus for potential safety hazards, makes corrections, and reports unique hazardous conditions to facilities management. Responds to work order requests in a timely manner.
  • Safety: Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly fashion and considers personal and public safety a priority while performing work duties.
Additional Duties
  • Contributes to the creation and maintenance of a respectful work environment with the facilities staff, College staff, students, and the public.
  • Under the direction of facilities management, provides assistance to all other facilities department staff as workload and staffing levels dictate
  • Provides on-site training and orientation to new or part-time employees, volunteers and community service individuals
  • Serves as a member of the emergency crew during emergencies or other critical situations, as identified by administration.
  • Maintains proficiency by attending required trainings and meetings and reading related materials
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of an associate degree, technical, vocational, or apprenticeship program related to the position
  • Two years experience of increasing responsibility in commercial grounds keeping
At the college’s discretion, additional qualifying experience may substitute
for education on a year-for-year basis
  • Prior experience driving dump truck, operating a backhoe and tractor, and the ability to learn the operation of tractor mounted equipment
  • Proven mechanical abilities and capable of operating and maintaining commercial grounds keeping equipment and tools
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time frequently on a daily basis and occasionally lift materials weighing up to 90 pounds, without assistance and possesses extensive body mobility
  • Current driver license and the ability to be insured by the college insurance carrier to drive college owned or leased vehicles. Must have at least three (3) years of driving history.
  • Beginner (limited) skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications, all preferably within the Microsoft Office Suite.

Desired Qualifications
  • Verifiable recent arborist experience
  • Oregon Landscape Contractors Association Landscape maintenance certifications
Additional Requirements
  • Forklift experience and the ability to obtain a certification within 60 days of hire
  • Certified pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

The following trainings at the College must be completed within the specified timelines:
  • Emergency and Safety Procedures Training within first week of hire
  • Gas Dispensing Training within first week of hire
  • MHCC Defensive Driving Course within first week of hire
  • Blood Borne Pathogen Training within one month of hire
HAZMAT Awareness Level Training upon first availability of course offering
Additional Qualifications and/or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of ornamental horticulture; pest identification and pesticide application; irrigation system maintenance and operation; and general grounds keeping principles and techniques
  • Knowledge and understanding of occupational safety precautions and regulations, such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  • Ability to read, understand and apply information on detailed written instructions and labels
  • Ability to calculate chemical application rates and the calibration of application equipment
  • Ability to wear protective body gear including respirator, face mask, hardhat, body suit, ear protection, knee pads, safety glasses, and gloves
  • Ability to apply insecticide, herbicide and fungicide
  • Ability to maintain basic record keeping to track expenditures and budget
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a crew and independently
Working Conditions and Important Information

Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to many hazards: extreme weather conditions, on varying terrain, frequent noise extremes, and subject to working in high vehicular traffic. Operates potentially hazardous equipment and tools such as dump trucks, backhoes, tractors, forklifts, mowers, plows, tillers, spreaders, chain saws, weed trimmers, edgers, power washers, leaf blowers, and chemical applicators. The work is physically demanding, requiring the ability to frequently move materials unassisted up to 50 pounds on a daily basis and up to 90 pounds occasionally. Requires extensive mobility: the ability to stand, sit, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, lift and carry objects and manipulate items overhead. Regular exposure to chemicals such as gasoline, diesel, paint, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides; blood borne pathogens and other body fluids; insects such as bees, wasps and spiders and dead or diseased animals. Work requires the ability to work irregular hours and report to work during inclement weather conditions or any other condition that might require a campus closure. Requires the ability to drive college-owned vehicles and/or your personal vehicle.

Salary:
Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement.
