Arizona State University is Hiring a Project Mgr Research Near Tempe, AZ

Job Description
The Western Alliance to Expand Student Opportunities (WAESO) program is seeking a project manager. The WAESO program is a National Science Foundation funded Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) project that has been led by Arizona State University for over 30 years. WAESO is currently an alliance of 13 colleges and universities in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah that aims to increase the numbers, retention, and graduation of diverse students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) areas. In this phase of the WAESO program, a key aspect is the institutionalization of programs that will enhance research opportunities for students through collaborations across and within institutions, and also to provide unique mentoring programs to enable transformative outcomes.

The project manager will report to the Project Principal Investigator (Pl) and interface with the co-Pis and stakeholders at each of the academic institutions to plan, direct, organize, and execute against the project requirements. The project manager will also identify and acquire necessary resources and coordinate efforts by all parties to ensure timely delivery of project outcomes in accordance with the National Science Foundation's expectations.
Working Environment
  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking.
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer, bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Ability to effectively interface with faculty and students in the program.
  • Occasional travel out of town to accompany students to national LSAMP (or related) conferences, to visit partner institutions, or to create new opportunities to support WAESO may be required.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years related experience; two (2) of which are in project management.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in using word processing, data analysis, and presentation software, e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, respectively (or equivalent platforms).
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Evidence of a Masters degree with 5 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and proficient in the use of standard project management and change management practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with budgets and financial procedures to ensure budget compliance.
  • Comfortable with learning new technologies to streamline activities.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience in managing a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) program.

Essential Duties
  • Plans, develops, implements, and manages a project team through complete task definitions and work requirement identification and assignments.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with key stakeholders to define project scope, strategy, budget, and outcomes; identifies critical resource expertise and targets appropriate internal and/or external sources to ensure optimal outcome(s).
  • Establishes and continually monitors/manages project expectations with team.
  • Prepares and maintains all project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones/deliverables, critical paths and dependencies; re-sets expectations as needed in consideration of project progress/outcomes.
  • Responds to all inquiries regarding project status; prepares and responds to all regulatory reporting/filings to ensure compliance. This includes but is not limited to annual project reports required by the National Science Foundation (NSF), budget allocations and summaries, and special NSF reports that may be required.
  • Manages the process of reviewing projects, notifying awardees, and following up on the fulfillment of project elements (including budget allocations).
  • Manages the student-faculty or peer student-student matching process for the mentor program.
  • Manages and assists with reviews and provides constructive feedback to students on their essays for scholarship, fellowship, and graduate school applications (to enable improved opportunities for students).
  • Manages, coaches, and supervises all project team members both internal and contracted to ensure optimal outcomes; builds, develops, and maintains relationships vital to project success.
  • Assists with identifying and applying new funding opportunities to enable institutionalization of the WAESO program by securing additional resources to support the project.
