The Communications Manager for the Institute of Human Origins is an energetic, detail-oriented, creative writer and multimedia storyteller who works collaboratively to identify, research, write, curate and edit content for all internal and external communications vehicles and platforms. From interviewing and writing engaging stories that connect with the larger community, to the development and deployment of creative digital campaigns, the Communications Manager works closely and collaboratively with staff and faculty in the unit as well as The College Dean’s Office and partners across the university to support ASU’s enterprise communications initiatives.

Essential Duties

  • Supervises and coordinates all print and electronic marketing, promotion, and public relations functions of the unit.
  • Edits, writes, and prepares layouts for web pages, annual reports, brochures, newsletters, and other unit publications. Including serving as a managing editor and production manager for biannual newsletter and annual appeal.
  • Creates and maintains web pages using HTML and other computer software.
  • Develops and executes long- and short-term communication plans to support outreach and development initiatives of the department including preparing budgetary supplements.
  • Oversees key areas of internal and external communications, media relations, public relations and community outreach.
    • Serves as a resource for IHO scientists and students for communications support.
    • Promotes IHO brand identity within ASU guidelines and policies to increase local, national and international visibility as the leading research center for human origins.
    • Promotes IHO science through placing stories in high-level media outlets and building external medial relations.
    • Identifies and repurposes news and promotional information.
    • Tracks research accomplishments of IHO scientists and students to prepare annual reports and other external communications to support outreach and development initiatives.
  • Supports Program Manager with internal and external communications.
    • Assists with the identification, cultivation, and stewardship of educational, institutional and individual relationships of the Institute.
    • Provides stewardship support for IHO Board of Directors, Research Council, and other external stakeholders.
    • Implements appropriate internal communications efforts among faculty, staff, and students to develop and maintain a strong sense of identity and community.
    • Promotes standardized messaging across the unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field AND five years of related experience, including three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices pertaining to department.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of publication format and editorial practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HTML and other web development applications, such as Drupal and Wordpress.
  • Experience in planning and implementing communications programs.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge writing in AP style, media relations, pitching stories, content development and editing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communication and marketing principles.
  • Experience using content curation skills, transforming content across platforms to meet different audience needs; ability to visualize the best way to present content.
  • Experience in social media content creation and social technology administration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Salesforce Marketing Cloud or other email marketing platforms.
  • Experience in organizing and coordinating a media portfolio.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. May require bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
