Job purpose

This position will lead in the assembly and disassembly of a wide variety of cranes, from operating the crane to directing and ensuring the quality of work of other personnel. They will communicate with dispatchers, brokers and truck drivers who are transporting the crane and will manage the load out or offload of the crane’s parts. Extensive knowledge required of the procedures required to properly assemble and erect cranes and how to troubleshoot problems as they arise. Good judgement and strong work ethic required. Specific individual equipment qualifications will be determined, and approved, by the Executive Management Team of ML Crane.

This person will work with crews and ensure correct equipment, positioning, and rigging have been utilized. Ensures that all crews are complying with safety requirements, have safety training, are wearing proper PPE, and complete the Job Hazard Analysis.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Safety is priority. Lead and direct personnel to ensure that all activities are in accordance with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain daily activity/progress paperwork – turn in at the end of each shift.
  • Full working knowledge of prohibitions, warnings, and cautions relative to assembling or disassembling each specific type of crane.
  • Assemble and disassemble crane(s) in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
  • Have a good working knowledge and understanding of LHE’s (Load Handling Equipment such as cranes, gantry systems, etc.), rigging, and safe load handling procedures.
  • Knows the right questions to ask during the lift planning phase and understands the roles and responsibilities of the site supervisor, the LHE operator, user, and owner.
  • Build and implement a load moving plan incorporating the proper field crews which include riggers, signalpersons, and associated personnel.
  • Knowledgeable in engineering concerns, regulatory requirements, emergency action plans, equipment specialists, and vendors.
  • Report any concerns to Supervisor immediately. Concerns can be with personnel, equipment, client, scope of work, etc.
  • Work under pressure to achieve timelines and client expectations.
  • Inspect site for any hazards that may hinder the ability to perform the assigned work safely and/or efficiently.
  • Lead morning tailgate discussions to ensure all personnel understand their role(s) for each day.
  • Ability to read lift plans and configuration drawings to ensure that equipment is assembled correctly for the scope of work being performed.
  • Willingness to exercise Stop Work Authority if/when needed.
  • Inspect and inventory equipment at each location and assigned job task.


Qualifications

The successful candidate will be required to hold a CDL, a national accredited crane certification and TWIC card, crawler crane knowledge, and strong interpersonal and customer service skills, along with a willingness to learn. Experience in lift plans and running engineering and lift software, able to scale jobs and size cranes accordingly, plan rigging configurations and crane configurations required. Must have wind maintenance experience and flexibility to travel up to 80%.

  • Receive and understand hand signals.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test, background test, and a fit for duty test.
  • Knowledgeable with OSHA regulations and ANSI standards.
  • Ability to travel, work overtime, double-time, and weekends.

The A/D Director needs to be knowledgeable and competent in four primary areas.

  • Full working knowledge of the crane manufacturer’s prohibitions, warnings and cautions relative to assembling or disassembling the specific type crane in question.
  • Fully familiar with the instructions and sequence of the crane’s assembly/disassembly per the manufacturer’s instructions or those provided by a qualified person (one judged to have equal knowledge of the process as compared to the manufacturer).
  • Have a complete understanding of the corporate (LHE owner’s) guidelines and requirements associated with A/D work. This may include, but not be limited to safety elements like fall arrest, barricading, traffic control, power line issues, PPE, component rigging, blocking/cribbing, use of hand tools, and the like.
  • Must have knowledge and competency in regards to the OSHA requirements as called out in 29CFR1926.1400, specifically .1403-.1407 and the referenced items in .1401, .1402, .1412, .1417, .1434, Appendix B and .251. (See www.osha.gov and search 29CFR1926.1400 for details.)
  • Conform with ML Cranes policy describing AD Director qualifications.

Preferred qualifications

  • NCCCO certifications for the cranes approved to oversee as the A/D Director
  • NCCCO Rigger I and Rigger II certification
  • Class A CDL


Working conditions

The employee may be required to wear appropriate PPE equipment. The employee could occasionally be exposed to extreme temperatures. Employees also must be able to ascend and descend ladders multiple times per shift.

  • Lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing, and/or pulling; climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant finger dexterity necessary.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs.
  • Ability to operate a forklift safely.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment WorkSTEPS physical.
  • Requires passing a pre-employment background check and drug screen to the satisfaction of ML Crane Group Company.
  • This position is exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, and moderate noise levels.
  • Must a possess a clean MVR & valid Driver's License
  • This job requires the ability to obtain a DOT Medical Certification.
  • Requires working and driving outdoors in various climates/temperatures and the possibility of sitting for an extended period.
